Roseville, California - Harry Vern Smith was born at Hollywood Presbyterian Hospital in Los Angeles, California on September 7, 1931 to Horace Harvey Smith and Helen Fitzsimmons Smith.
He grew up in Hollywood, California.
As a child, Harry worked at his Mother's nursery, the Smith-Rowsey Nursery, where he learned about plants and gardening. Harry became a Boy Scout in 1942 at the age of 11. This was the beginning of a lifelong love for the Boy Scouts of America. After graduating with a bachelor's degree in Horticulture from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Harry got his teaching credential and began student teaching in the San Fernando Valley. Soon after, in 1957, Harry was hired for his first job in scouting as a District Executive with the San Fernando Valley Council. Harry's 40 year career in scouting included working at the following councils in California; San Fernando Valley, San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles, Golden Empire Council in Carmichael, and the Verdugo Hills Counsel in Glendale. His job titles included District Executive, Director of Membership and Exploring, Director of Special Events, Director of Camping, Field Director, Director of Support Services, Director of Administration, Director of Field Services, and Scout Executive. In 1991 Harry was promoted to Western Region Human Resources Manager. He retired from Professional Scouting in 1997.
Harry enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and his great grandchildren, stamp collecting, photography and planting and design.
Harry Vern Smith is survived by his beloved Wife of 66 years, Marie Margaret Smith and children; Beverly Massa (Husband Jim) and Ken Smith (wife Sharilyn), ; 3 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents and brother Robert Smith.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 23rd at 11:00 a.m. at the Centerpoint Community Church Chapel, 515 Sunrise Ave Roseville, CA 95661.

I was a youth and young adult during Mr. Smith's tenure as Verdugo Hills Scout Executive. I remember he had a lot of tough decisions to make, not all of them popular at the time, but because of his dedication and work we still have Verdugo Hills Council today. Thank you for your service to Scouting as our prayers go out to you and your family!

Harry, Marge and family were a wonderful presence in the Verdugo Hills Council, Scouts BSA. Harry left a lasting legacy for the youth of our area with his vision, administrative acumen and kind demeanor. Kathryn recalls happy times in the Smith home, where Harry & Marge frequently hosted the staff of the Council, when she worked as a District Executive under Harry's leadership. Hard to find photos, since Harry was always the photographer! :-).
