Ian MACKEY NEWMAN Obituary

MACKEY NEWMAN, Ian Christopher
Died peacefully at his Richmond home in his mother's arms on Tuesday the 19th of January 2010. This bright star, intellectual warrior, and brilliant philosopher friend leaves a tangible mark in the hearts and minds of many. Born in Fortuna, California on July 13, 1983, Ian would race through his education at an early age, entering UC Berkeley at 15, spending a graduate year in St. Andrews, Scotland in Classics, and completing his Juris Doctorate degree at Golden Gate University of San Francisco in spring of '09 on the Dean's List. Ian passed the California Bar Exam in November and looked forward to practicing intellectual property law and serving his community. Ian took an incredible and surprising path to these successes. Born with congenital muscular dystrophy and given a year to live, he filled his life full to the brim. He lived as there was no tomorrow and in the here and now. The richness and texture of his daily life was palpable. He traveled extensively from the beginning. Australia, Mexico, Costa Rica, many of the US states, the UK, Europe, and the French West Antilles were part of his education. He had a unique ability to share intimately with a great diversity of friends. He was a true renaissance man and a complete gentleman. He is survived by his mother Jennifer Margaret Mackey of Rio Dell, California; his sister Amber Aurora Pulitano of Portland, Oregon; grandmother Barbara Brand Mackey of Sacramento, California; aunt Sydney Mackey; uncle Christopher Mackey; aunt Maryalice Mackey; and all of their beautiful and dearly loved children that gave such brightness to Ian's daily life. He also leaves his father/stepmother, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Edwin Newman of Fortuna, California, and much loved related aunts/uncles/cousins. Ian will continue to be with us in thought, word and deed. His exemplary personality changed the lives of all that met him for the better. Through his deep connection with others I know we may find him everywhere as we walk out into our own futures. May we continue to draw from his wisdom and make every effort to sustain his level of consciousness wherever we go. Memorial service on Monday, Feb. 1, 5:30pm-6:30pm at Golden Gate University, 6th floor, San Francisco. Donations to Golden Gate University, Office of Advancement, Ian Mackey Newman Fund (to be memo'd on the check), 538 Mission Street, SF, CA 94105 or Humboldt Area Foundation/Ian Christopher Mackey Newman Fund, 373 Indianola Road, Bayside, CA 95524.

Jennifer, I had been thinking for several weeks of something I wanted to talk about with Ian. When I finally Googled him (his information is here... somewhere... it seems less than two months ago that we saw the two of you...) we, and our friends, were shocked and saddened to discover Ian was not among us. Your memories sound strong. Best to Amber
