Jack D. Van Maren, a fourth generation Californian, passed away peacefully at home in Citrus Heights, California, on January 3, 2005. He was born to Cornelius and Loretta Van Maren on November 18, 1923. Jack spent most of his life on the family ranch that was settled by his great-grandparents where as a boy he herded turkeys, tended and harvested crops, and worked for local ranchers. He loved family life and was an avid reader. Jack also served five and a half years as a Citrus Heights Fire Commissioner, was an early director of the CAHP Credit Union, a Citrus Heights Community Club Trustee and a former member of the Roseville 20-30 Club. I was a neighbor of Jack for 17 years and I remember him fondly as a man of great integrity and sincerity. I can see how some may have been put off by his sometimes-gruff demeanor but I got to know him a bit deeper and discovered his great compassion and generosity toward others. He was truly an amazing man.

I remember Jack telling me about his encounter with a young boy who was trespassing on his property and who confronted him with a gun. Without hesitation Jack drew his own weapon and disarmed the kid. Jack truly was a survivor.

I consider Jack to be an important part of the fabric of my life and I am thankful and richer for having known him.

I recall the wonderful phrase he used when parting with someone after a visit - a phrase taken, no doubt, from his career as a CHP officer. I will use that phrase in closing.

Farewell, Jack and "keep 'er under a hundred."

Jack will always be remember when he was the Duty Officer at Valley Division (Zone 2) in Bldg A. He always had a wonderful smile and something pleasant to say to every employee that entered the building. He was a gentleman and a friend.
