James "Jim" J. Carroll, born September 7, 1926 on a farm in southern Michigan to Teresa and Gerald Carroll, passed away on August 31, 2017. He was at his home in Roseville with his wife of 65 years, Beverly, nearby. He passed away after enduring Parkinson's for the last decade and on the eve of his favorite day of the year. Jim's family moved from Michigan to a farm in south-eastern Kansas at the beginning of the Depression. Jim was the oldest boy in a family of 11 so he provided for the family by hunting, fishing and tending to the crops. In 1951, he was drafted into the Army and served during the Korean War. He obtained commendations and medals, including one as a sharpshooter. Jim served stateside and in Germany during the war before obtaining his honorable discharge in 1956. Just months before shipping out for basic training, he met his future bride, Beverly Ann Smith, of Pasadena, California. The next time home, he proposed and Beverly accepted. He was off again to Fort Benjamin for Finance School but when he came home for the holidays, the whirlwind couple made it official, marrying on December 27, 1951. Jim worked as an accountant in the electrical supply business his entire life, spending the bulk of his career at Consolidated Electrical Distributors as the finance manager for over 20 stores in California and Nevada. Jim's faith and family were primary in his life. Jim and Beverly were frequent readers at St. Rose Church and Beverly loved to sing at Mass. They raised five loving children, who they exposed to the great outdoors of the western United States with family fishing, hunting and camping trips throughout the West. Aside from hunting and fishing, Jim's favorite passions were golf and bridge. For a few decades he was a mainstay at Diamond Oaks golf course and also loved to play special places like Cypress Point and Pebble Beach. As he got older, Jim discovered the world of duplicate bridge. A party player his whole life, he quickly immersed himself in the competitive bridge world and amassed master points quickly. Jim is survived by his devoted wife of 65 years, Beverly, his sons Jeffrey (Julie), Patrick (Jill), James (Faith), and Gerald (Juliana), his daughter, Laura (Joe) and his grandchildren Erin, Brooke, Jennifer, and Andie. Jim was pre-deceased by his loving sisters, Ruthie, Carlie, Patricia and Kathy and brother Joseph. Jim is survived by his loving sisters Conn, Jane and Marilyn and brother William. There will be a mass at St. Rose Church in Roseville on Saturday, October 7 at 11:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to be made to either
CalWaterfowl.org or The Parkinson's Foundation.
