James Flint Obituary

James Carleton Flint
May 14, 1926 - December 26, 2020
Carmichael, California - Jim Flint was born in Portland, Oregon on May 14, 1926 to Carleton and Helen Flint (nee Lane) and spent his childhood moving to different cities in the West. An only child, he relished time with extended family, especially adventures with peers hiking and bicycling. As a 4th generation Californian, he loved Northern California and had many fond memories of spending time on his grandfather's ranch near Sloughhouse and exploring the foothills around Sacramento.
After graduating from Galileo HS in San Francisco, he joined the Navy, attended Princeton and then graduated from UC Berkeley in 1948. Jim married Shirley Jacobsen in Sacramento the same year, and settled there to raise his family.
Early in his career he worked a variety of jobs -- mapmaker for the US Geological Survey, logging camp supplier for his father's company, manager at Campbell Soup Company and purchaser for Sacramento County Schools. Jim loved working for the better part of his career with the California State Dept of Rehabilitation Business Enterprises Program. His work allowed him to bring together many skills and interests where he created opportunities for the legally blind to become independent business owners in the food service industry.
Jim was a boy scout in San Francisco's Troop 3, and later belonged to Toastmasters and Jaycees where he met lifelong friends. He was also a SCORE mentor. Jim was a natural athlete who enjoyed sports of all kinds including tennis, racquetball, swimming and beach volleyball.
After the death of his beloved Shirley in 1985, Jim found a loving wife in Judi Geyer, who he married in 1988. Judi and Jim were able to spend many happy retirement years together and shared a love for traveling, especially to other countries and often with friends. He loved a good road trip where he could enjoy beautiful scenery.
Jim died peacefully on December 26, 2020 in Roseville with Judi by his side. He is survived by his wife, Judi, children Nancy Greene (Joe) and Judy Crackel (Kevin) and step-children Kathy Heath (Bill) and John Scott (Chris) and seven grandchildren Dana (Ken), Lindsay (Brian), Scott, Dennen, Danae, Kelly and Kevin and four great-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by his stepson Jeff Scott and his grandson Cullen.
Jim was a kind, generous, warm-hearted, self-effacing and fun-loving man who deeply loved his family and friends. His welcoming spirit will be missed by all.
Given the COVID pandemic, a memorial is planned for a later date. Donations may be made to the National Brain Tumor Society in honor of his grandson Cullen.

The family of Barbara & Milton Schwartz sends its condolences and affectionate good wishes to the family of Jim Flint, with whom we became acquainted in the 1960's through our mutual friendship with Liz & Emil Berger. Our parents enjoyed countless wonderful times, over a period of three or four decades, with that multi-family group. Our generation (Boomers) were beneficiaries of those warm and trusted relationships, as well. On behalf of the Schwartzes, I convey our sadness for your loss and our rich, respectful celebration of a truly good man and a life well lived. May we all be so blessed.

Love you tons, grandpa!
The best, sound advise and insight.
The weekend before I left for boot camp I had a lot of nerves and anxiety. Grandpa told me I’d survive just fine and he couldn’t wait to see me when I got back. On my return from training we discussed my duty stations. Having more knowledge of the military I was enthralled with all his military (Navy) stories, including how he went from enlisted to an officer (lots of respect, grandpa)! He suggested I learn more Spanish as he had. It has been a life-saver in my nursing career.
This man gave hugs galore! A man who’d bend down to your height for a hug at 5 years old or a hug at 35! Tall, handsome, calm, friendly, well-spoken, and loving!

Grandma Judi, love you so much.

Judy and Nancy, with deepest empathy, I’m so sorry for your loss.
