James Travers Obituary

TRAVERS, James ''Reggie''
Our beloved James ''Reggie'' Travers passed away on January 30, 2007. Born May 29, 1927 in Hoquiam, WA to Dorothy and John Travers. Raised in Hoquiam during the depression by Dorothy and his ''pop'' Ed Nyberg, Reg learned lifelong values of hard work and integrity. During WWII Reg proudly served in the Merchant Marines. After the war, Reggie moved to Alaska to work on the project building the road to Anchorage. In Alaska he found a career in broadcasting, met his wife, Mimi and had their first daughter, Vicki. Reggie also played a role in the Alaska Territory's Democratic Party, and proudly worked towards the campaign for statehood. Leaving Alaska in the early 1960's Reggie joined McClatchy Broadcasting in Modesto as an ad salesman for radio station KBEE. In Modesto, Reggie and Mimi had their second daughter, Lisa. In 1969, the family moved to Sacramento where Reggie was sales manager for KFBK. In the late 1970's Reg started his own business, Reg Travers Advertising, which was the first ad agency to specialize in recruitment advertising in the Sacramento area. Later branching out into the RV industry, Reggies agency again was the first to represent the Recreation Vehicle Dealers Association and was instrumental in the creation of semi-annual RV Shows, now widely replicated. His agencys philosophy was based on personal service and integrity. He created lasting and valued friendships throughout his career and work-life. Reggie's passions included fishing and hunting, cooking and good food, martinis, music, roses, old friends, and family. Reggie is survived by his wife of 50 years, Mimi Travers; daughters Vicki Ibarra (Bob) and Lisa Holt (Jim); grandsons Jesse Ibarra (wife Becca), Steven Ibarra, and Trevor Thick; niece (''3rd daughter'') Jennifer Travers; brother and sister-in-law Corky and Nancy Travers, sister Annalee Jones. Local relatives include sisters-in-law Marilyn Gorst and Anna Johnson; nephew Aric Weistreich, nieces Liz Ricks and Mikey Thornberry, and many beloved great and great-great nieces and nephews. Throughout his illness so many friends shared with us that Reg was like a father to them. It is a blessing to hear how he touched the lives of so many and a comfort to know he lives on in so many of us. Memorial services will be held Friday February 9, 2007 at 11:00 am at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 4910 Lemon Hill Avenue, Sacramento, 95824. In lieu of flowers, please donate to Gloria Dei's Food Pantry Project.

I first met Reggie when he was working for Gene Griswold. I called on him until he gave up the RV Show account. He was one of my favorites. I enjoyed his travel stories. We shared a few regarding Alaska. I always found him to be a breathe of fresh air in a business that often times takes itself way too seriously. Since he answered the phone "Reggie here" all my correspondence was addressed to "Reggie there". I will miss his laugh and sense of humor.

I'll always miss Reg answering the phone with, "Reggie here" and upon hearing it was me crooning "Trelou-ooooo". He will be dearly missed and forever remembered.
