Janice Hunt Obituary

HUNT, JANICE S.
Born Janice Shaw on January 16, 1935 in Salem, Oregon, she passed peacefully on October 26, 2003. Preceded in death by her father, Bernard Shaw, and brother Bernard Shaw, Jr. Jan is survived by her mother, Audrey Shaw of Roseburg, OR; husband Richard of Sacramento; son Jim of Sioux City, IA; son Jon and his wife Robin of Elk Grove; daughter Jannie of Orinda, CA, daughter-in-law Cindy Challed of Sacramento; and grandchildren Ashley and Jonathan Hunt, Cameron Goss, and Jenna Francisco. Jan was a graduate of Oregon State University, where she met and married Richard Hunt on December 20, 1956. While raising her family, she taught Child Development at Porterville (CA) Junior College, and moved in 1965 to Sacramento. As an active member of Bethany Presbyterian Church, Jan coordinated the sponsorship in 1975 of a relocating Vietnamese family. Her involvement grew over the years, culminating in 1987 in her appointment as Executive Director of the Southeast Asian Assistance Center. She held that position until her death, consistently and tirelessly acting as an inspirational mentor and beloved friend to literally thousands of people. The family invites friends to attend a service in celebration of Jan's life on October 31, 2003, at 12:00 PM at Bethany Presbyterian Church, 5625 24th Street. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Southeast Asian Assistance Center or Bethany Presbyterian Church, both at 5625 24th Street.

Jan was a very caring person, I have referred many students to Jan for various reasons. She was always willing to help or find help for them. She always had a smile and always remembered details about people that made them feel special.

My most sincere condolences to the Hunt family. And for all of us, we appreciate Jan for the person she was, and I am honored to have been a part of her life.

Jim, Jan's older son, has shared with me during the past two years numerous intimate anecdotes of his mother's life. He is proud of her good deeds and her spirit will forever be a part of his.
