Jerry Sappington Obituary


SAPPINGTON, Jerry Bryan
Jerry was a loving husband, and doting father, grandfather and great-grandfather who died in Sacramento on March 20, 2008 after a long battle with Alzheimer's. Grandson of Mississippi farmers and furniture maker, he was born with a twin sister Mary Kate on January 26, 1933 in Lolita, TX to Claude and Ethel Sappington, one of 6 sons and 3 daughters. He was a graduate of Edna, TX high school where he lettered in football and track. At the start of the Korean War he enlisted in the Marine Corps being promoted to the rank of Sergeant. Upon his discharge he was married to Florence Davis on November 28, 1952. Jerry was employed as a maintenance engineer and electrician at ALCOA; Ballistic Missile Early Warning Station at Clear, AK; and Colombo Bakery. He was preceded in death by his parents and 2 brothers and 2 sisters. He is survived by his wife Florence, his daughter Jaynee Laino of Sacramento, his son Jerry Jr. "Jeb" of Vallejo, 4 loving grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren and 3 brothers and 1 sister. Jerry treasured time with family as the most important part of his life, especially grandkids and great-grandkids. He was a man of much curiosity and many interests including RVing, sports, gardening, abalone fishing and Alaska big game hunting. He was a charter member of the Lions Club in Clear, AK, where he also organized and coached the first Little League team and was a member of the Elks Club of Carmichael, CA. He loved entertaining people with his stories and jokes. Many of his friends and neighbors will fondly recall his generosity and kindness in helping others. A celebration of Jerry's life will be held at the clubhouse at Lakeview Village Mobile Home Park, 6211 Summerset Lane, Citrus Heights, CA at 1 pm on Sunday, March 30, 2008. Remembrances may be made to Alzheimer's Aid Society of Northern California, 2641 Cottage Way, Suite 4, Sacramento, CA 95825.

My father, Dan Nolan, held Jerry in his close circle of friends, as an honest, plain spoken man of his word. Jerry was a friend to my dad and an asset to our Lakeview community and I miss seeing his smiling face.
