John HILDEBRAND Obituary

HILDEBRAND, Dr. John F.
1941 - 2011
Dr. Hildebrand (Jack) was born in New Rochelle, NY. He graduated from Notre Dame University (philosophy) and Wayne State University (medical school). As part of his medical studies he attended the Universite Libre de Bruxelles, Belgium, where he learned to speak French fluently, met his wife Beatrice, and made many friends. Following his internship at LAC USC Medical Center, and work in a clinic in Ceres, CA, Jack opened his family practice in Elk Grove in 1975.

Jack's passion was to provide compassionate care to his patient's families from the 'cradle to the grave,' covering disciplines such as internal medicine, orthopedics, general surgery, OB-GYN, and sports medicine.

Jack's other passions were his family, fitness, chess, opera music, 'lumberjacking' and Notre Dame football. As a triathlete, he was once ranked 10th in the nation in his age group. He was an accomplished mountaineer as well, hiking up and skiing down many majestic peaks, including Denali (AK) and Mt. Vinson (Antarctica). In 2003 he spent 3 months at the base camp of Mt Everest where he was the doctor of a Franco/Belgian expedition. In 2007, he finished the Death Ride (bicycling) in the Sierras. He donated his time to charitable organizations, most recently in Haiti as a physician after the 2010 earthquake.

On January 28, 2011, Dr. John F. Hildebrand passed away at the age of 69 after a 3-month battle with metastatic melanoma. Jack will be remembered for his independent mind, his loyalty, his courage, his integrity, his generosity, and his wacky sense of humor.

He leaves behind his wife Beatrice; his children, Christopher (Elina), Mark (Sonia), and Claire (Lauren); his five grandsons, Tristan, Kian, Elijah, Sten, and Noah; his sister Barbara Finch; his extended family, and many friends.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be sent to The Society for the Blind in Sacramento. A memorial service will be conducted at St Joseph's Catholic Church, 9961 Elk Grove Florin Rd, Elk Grove on Saturday, February 5 at 12pm.

I just happened to look up Dr. Hildebrand after all these many years. He had been my best doctor in my life, so I wanted to see what he was up to. I had no idea that he had passed. He worked out in the same gym as me, and when I cut my head on the sprinklers in the sauna, he took me to his nearby office - same parking lot, and put stitches in my head. He didn't charge me a dime! I know that he had a great big heart, and I am sorry that he had passed on, but he lives in my memory, and I'm sure, many others have fond memories of Dr. Hildebrand as well.

Doctor Jack was my primary care physician for many years. He was a very special guy whose caring and sincerity were the equal of his excellent clinical skills. He was an "old school" doctor in the best sense of that characterization, a model that other physicians would do well to emulate. I and others whose lives he touched will miss him greatly.

Dear Hildebrand Family: I'm so very sorry to hear of Jack's death.
Even tho death is only a transition from one form of consciousness to another, for you and for me it is a loss. Years ago at Notre Dame, Jack & I prepared for organic chemistry exams together and when my wife & I were living in Switzerrland and Jack was in Belgium he came down to visit--perhaps in a Deux cheveaux (can't remember for sure).
When he stopped by my house in South Bend at the last ND class reuion he attended, he was traveling with his own bicycle so he could ride in the area!

May God bless you all. Please let me know if there is anything I can do.

Dear Beatrice,

I am deeply saddened by the sudden passing of Doctor Jack Hildebrand, Muganga jack.

I met "Muganga Jack" through the Alliance Francaise when I was doing my LL.M at McGeorge School of Law. We connected spontaneously. Hildebrand family invited me to their home one weekend. Muganga told me about his life in Africa in Congo DRC where I was born. I was deeply impressed by his devotion, generosity and kindness to people. We will surely miss him.

It is impossible to list all that Jack did for the Alliance Française, in part because he did so much, but also because so much that he did was self-effacing and unseen by most. He coupled his enormous dedication and great heart with a sharp and ready wit - he is irreplaceable, but will live on in our memories.

Dear Hildebrand Family,
I remember the kindness and thoughtfulness of Dr. Hildebrand back in the 70's when my son's played soccer in Elk Grove. But, I especially remember a Saturday afternoon when one of my sons had an accident, Dr. Hildebrand met us at his office to stitch up my son's lip. This was only one of the many emergency calls he received from our family with growing, active boys. There is no doubt I wasn't the only Mom who called for help, knowing he would be there. My deepest sympathy to the entire family. He will be remembered fondly.

Oh my---

Jack was a good man. He extended favors without question, although he took too many "Mulligans." I truly enjoyed the weekends at Tahoe, my head still hurts, but the food was superb and I will miss the bike ride around the lake. I can imagine ND will go undefeated where Jack is...

We met Jack at the "Alliance Francaise".He was such an accomplished individual. He is going to be missed by all.
