Rancho Murieta, California - Joe Mazzoni passed away unexpectedly on Saturday morning August 17, 2024, at his home. He is survived by three daughters: Cindy Heinz, Liz & Tom Hanacek, Chris & Ty Bacon and daughter-in-law Wendy Mazzoni. Grandchildren: Nick Heinz, Cara Heinz, Thomas Hanacek, Giovanni Mazzoni, Dominic Mazzoni, Matthew Hanacek, Ali Heinz, Gabriella Mazzoni & Jake Montgomery. Great-grandchildren; Desiree Free, Cameron Heinz & Caiden Heinz.

Joe graduated from high school in Healdsburg, CA. During his time in high school, he met Nancy Rosa who became his wife for over 50 years. Joe and Nancy married in Healdsburg and then moved to Corvallis, OR where Joe attended Oregon State University and majored in Wildlife Management. Joe was hired by the Department of Interior and was assigned to the Fish & Wildlife Service.

After his retirement in 1998, Joe and Nancy moved to Rancho Murieta, CA. Joe had an immediate impact on the Rancho Murieta community. He became a member of the local Kiwanis and soon was elected Vice President. Then served as President 2003 2004. During his term, Joe started several community activities: Kids Fishing Day, Casino Corral, Blues & Brews, the expansion of Stonehouse Park, the opening of Consumes School and brought Music Mike to the area. Joe also started a committee to provide dictionaries to 3rd graders in two community schools.

Joe had a strong faith as a Christian and was a member of the Catholic Church. His faith was evident in the way he lived his life. Joe loved his career, family, bocce ball, golf and friends. He was loved by many and will be sorely missed.

A celebration of life will be held Thursday, August 29th at the St. Vincent De Paul Catholic Church, 14670 Cantova Way, Rancho Murieta, CA.

Joe was an awesome, kind, man.
So caring to all he met.
I ran into him a few weeks ago. He was his usual cheerful self, meeting life as it came to him.
I´m blessed to have that memory of Joe.

Have known and worked with Joe since 1958. He was always a close and caring friend as well as an outstanding employee of U.S Fish and Wildife Service. His visits to Portland to spend time with family kept us in touch during retirement. We miss Nancy, and now Joe is gone, too. A great loss to his family and many friends.

I will miss Joe as I took him his son and grandsons fishing years ago. He was a great father and grandfather. Memories that will live on in my heart forever. Aloha Big Al

Joe hired my husband, Steve Thompson, as a wildlife biologist in 1977, and they worked together at Malheur until we left for Olympia in 1983. Decades later, Nancy, Joe, Steve and I wound up in CA, and we'd get together every so often to share memories and a meal. I remember strong-arming Joe into a conversation at a local cafe one day, urging him to help me understand the thrill some hunters receive while hunting--specifically, shooting an animal. He was thoughtful for several long seconds, and then said it was hard to explain, but that his own philosophy had changed in recent years. He told me he no longer found the hunt as exciting as it once was. "Now, I only shoot animals with a camera," he said. It was a moment, and I have often thought about his comment over the years. So thank you for your honesty and compassion, Joe. I'm raising a glass of limoncello in your honor, and sipping to you, Nancy and Steve. Rest in peace, friend. xoxo

I had the privilege and pleasure of working with Joe when he was a director of the National Wildlife Refuge Association, where he was wise, deeply knowledgeable, and big-hearted. I'm sorry he's gone.
