Joe was an awesome, kind, man.
So caring to all he met.
I ran into him a few weeks ago. He was his usual cheerful self, meeting life as it came to him.
I´m blessed to have that memory of Joe.

Have known and worked with Joe since 1958. He was always a close and caring friend as well as an outstanding employee of U.S Fish and Wildife Service. His visits to Portland to spend time with family kept us in touch during retirement. We miss Nancy, and now Joe is gone, too. A great loss to his family and many friends.

I will miss Joe as I took him his son and grandsons fishing years ago. He was a great father and grandfather. Memories that will live on in my heart forever. Aloha Big Al

Joe hired my husband, Steve Thompson, as a wildlife biologist in 1977, and they worked together at Malheur until we left for Olympia in 1983. Decades later, Nancy, Joe, Steve and I wound up in CA, and we'd get together every so often to share memories and a meal. I remember strong-arming Joe into a conversation at a local cafe one day, urging him to help me understand the thrill some hunters receive while hunting--specifically, shooting an animal. He was thoughtful for several long seconds, and then said it was hard to explain, but that his own philosophy had changed in recent years. He told me he no longer found the hunt as exciting as it once was. "Now, I only shoot animals with a camera," he said. It was a moment, and I have often thought about his comment over the years. So thank you for your honesty and compassion, Joe. I'm raising a glass of limoncello in your honor, and sipping to you, Nancy and Steve. Rest in peace, friend. xoxo

I had the privilege and pleasure of working with Joe when he was a director of the National Wildlife Refuge Association, where he was wise, deeply knowledgeable, and big-hearted. I'm sorry he's gone.
