Joseph Plescia Obituary

Proudly born in Sacramento to Sicilian immigrants on October 6, 1923, Joe Sr. came from humble beginnings. He experienced life ranging from having his first family Christmas Tree at the age of 15 as a result of saving money from a boyhood job, assisting his father with selling vegetables out of his father's truck (the scale still hangs in the garage), picking wild cardoni in the fields that once surrounded Sacramento, to serving in the Navy during WWII, to being co-founder of the then Capital City Boxing Club, gas station owner, Kraft Food salesman, and ultimately building a successful bar with his wife Nancy Jo, son Joe Jr., and daughter-in-law Donna. He was known for his feisty, demonstrative personality and his love for rolling the dice - - literally and figuratively. In his sunset years, Joe Sr. enjoyed spending time with the co-patriarch of the family Michael Plescia and attending the Arbereshe picnics. Joe Sr. passed at home in the presence of Nancy Jo and Joe Jr., who are the reason for his years of health and happiness. Joe Sr. is now reunited with his dearly departed daughter Carol Lee Boman, his sister Vera Fracchia, brother George Zarzana, and parents Mary and Andrew Plescia. Joe Sr. is survived by wife Nancy Jo, son Joe Jr. (Donna), and son- in-law Dana Rumburg, grand-daughters Michelle Harris (Troy), Marie Davis (Arnel), and Jennifer Plescia, along with ten great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. For family and friends a celebration of life luncheon will be held at the Dante Club, 2330 Fair Oaks Blvd., on Friday, January 8 at 12:30 p.m. to honor the 92 years of Joe Sr.'s full life. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the Wounded Warriors Project, PO Box 758517, Topeka, KS, 66675.

Dear Plescia family,
so sorry to hear of Joe Sr's passing. I know he's in a better place now.
I will always appreciate how he treated my daughter, Kate (Jennifer's best friend from first grade) like family.
There were many occasions when we all celebrated some event together and Kate and I felt like we were part of the family.
Joe will be greatly missed but I know his memories will forever remain in your hearts.

Senior will be missed by many. I remember his great smile. I was only a kid but I also remember the Capitol City Boxing Club and the great fights that Joe Sr promoted.

Joe Jr, I still have the autographed picture of "Stan The Man" that your dad (and you) gave me 25 years ago. May your memories (and you have a lot of them!) bring you comfort.

Deepest condolences to the entire family.

I feel like my words diminish and shrink the love I feel for my Pops and fail to capture the essence of who he was as a man, husband, friend, (grand)father, and the other roles and relationships he had in his life. His charismatic personality just filled a room and his dreaded passing just overwhelms my heart with grief. I have so many wonderful memories and for that I am grateful.

A few of those memories

I, six or seven years old at that time, am sitting in the back middle seat of his then brown Cadillac. Pops is barreling south bound down Alhambra between the Lime Light and now Safeway. His right arm across the bucket seat. Joe Brusca in the passenger seat. And, my pops, is completely turned around talking to me, not watching the road. No wonder my family knows Gunther so well. We all learned how to drive from Pops.

Pops would call my father every day to collaborate on the puzzle published in the Sacramento Bee.

Without fail, Pops would knock something over at the dinner table because he always talked with his hands.

At the ripe age of, again, six or seven, Pops taught me how to play Liar's Dice and how to flip the dice when know one was looking.

His laugh.

His story about how his mother would tell him he has the most beautiful feet in the world.

And, always letting me crawl into his lap for snuggles and a hug.

Pops will always be in my heart.
