Junell GARY Obituary

GARY, Junell Leslie 'Les'
Les was born in Dallas, Texas on March 10, 1929 to LeeRoy & Lila Gary and he passed away peacefully December 16, 2012, after a brief hospitalization.

Les was the beloved husband of Mary Gary. He was the loving father of Bobby (Carolyn), Michael (Patty), Kent, Norm (Kathy), Jennifer, Paul (Rebecca) and John. He was the caring brother of Timothy, Curtis and James Lee (Judy) of Texas and Eugene Gary of Vallejo, Cali- fornia. Les was the proud and adoring grandfather of 14; great-grandfather of 9. Extended family includes Shannon Garcia, Nicole Esteves, Vanita Finney, Donna Webster and many, many other loved ones.

SMSgt. Junell Leslie Gary retired from the USAF in 1970. His second retirement was after a career of advocacy as the Executive Director of the Sacramento Association for the Retarded. Les was a 64 year member of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity, and remained active in the activities of the local ZBL chapter.

Les was blessed with a beautiful voice and loved to sing. But it was sharing the message of faith, hope, love and peace that remains his lasting legacy.

Les was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Elaine Owens Gary and his daughter-in-law, Marilynn Gary.

The Gary family would like to extend a special thank you to Kaiser Morse Avenue, 5th floor East nursing team for their kind and supportive care... 'bushels of daisies, for each of you.'

The memorial service will be January 5, 2012 at St. Andrews AME Church, 2131 8th Street, Sacramento, Calif. at 11:00am.

In lieu of flowers a donation may be made, in the name of J. Leslie Gary, to the Young Peoples Department at St. Andrews Church.

Les Gary was my NCOIC when I was a 19 year old airman at Mather Air Force base in 1966. He was one of the most profound influences in my young adult life. He was a great man, greatly missed.

I met Les through his wife Mary who I had the pleasure of working with at SCUSD. I could tell they were a loving and caring couple to each other and to those around them. I know he will be missed by many but his beautiful voice is singing praises to our King! My thoughts and prayers our with you Mary and to the family and friends. May God bless you and keep you during your time of loss.

I had the honor of meeting Mr. Gary through his daughter Jennifer. He was a humorous person, not to mention a caring and loving father and grandfather.

I had the privilege of knowing Les through his son Kent. I have never met another man with a greater zest for life and care for his family, as well as those around him as Les. Condolences from our family to his. He will be missed.

I have had the privilege of calling Les my friend and mentor since I went to work with him in 1978. I will miss his exuberant hugs, and the way he always found humor in all kinds of situations, and joy in connecting with people. May you find comfort in all the memories you have of your lives with this gifted and loving man.

My Heart and Prayers go out to the Gary Family during this difficult time. As I only had the pleasure of meeting Mr Gary many yrs ago through his son and my mentor Norm Gary, may his legacy continue to shine bright and full through the ones that knew him, loved him, and honored him by respect of how he lived, loved, and touch others. May God continue to guard, guide, love and protect The Gary Family and us all according to his promise of his will, in the name of his loving son, Jesus Christ.
