Kieran Fitzpatrick Obituary

Kieran Joseph Fitzpatrick

December 22, 1940 - November 26, 2023

Sacramento, California - Kieran Joseph Fitzpatrick of Sacramento, died peacefully at home on November 26, 2023 at the age of 82. Kieran was born in Philadelphia, PA on December 22, 1940 to Dennis Fitzpatrick and Barbara Driess Fitzpatrick as the second of nine children. Kieran was predeceased by his parents and his brothers Dennis, Charles, Paul, and John. He is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Martha, and their four children, Daniel (Linda), Thomas (Nancy), James (Camille) and Susan Williams (Easy), as well as his sisters Barbara Loarie (John), Eileen Auer (Larry), Mary Ludwig (Kenneth), and Patricia Mills (Charles), two sisters-in-law, Beverly Fitzpatrick and Bonnie Fitzpatrick and brother-in-law, Robert Galligan (Betty). Kieran was a proud Grandpop to twelve grandchildren: Brian (Victoria), Everett (Katie), Evan, Conner, Franklin, Emma, Ginger, Katherine, Bridget, Owen, Steffani, and Joseph, and Great Grandpop to Vince, Colton and Cayde. He was also Uncle to many dear nieces and nephews.

When Kieran was nine years old his family moved to Anaheim, CA. He attended Mater Dei High School, then Saint Mary's College, followed by Creighton University Medical School. At these institutions he received more than an education; he developed life-long friendships. While at Saint Mary's he met Martha Galligan in 1961 and they were married in 1963. Following Medical School Kieran completed his internship and residency in Pediatrics at Los Angeles Children's Hospital before entering the Air Force in 1968. From 1970-1972 Kieran was a Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Fellow at the University of Washington in Seattle.

In 1972 Kieran and Marty settled in Sacramento to raise their family. They became members of Presentation Parish where they met many of their closest friends. Kieran accepted a position with the Permanente Medical Group, practicing Pediatrics with Kaiser-Permanente at the Morse Avenue facility from 1972-1984. He then helped open the Kaiser facility at South Sacramento, where he practiced Pediatrics from 1984-2005, serving as Physician-in-Chief for twelve years.

Following retirement in 2005, Kieran volunteered at Kaiser's Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Clinic and the UC-Davis Sickle Cell Clinic. He and Marty volunteered together at Camp Okizu Oncology Camp for one week each summer from 2006-2010. Kieran also assisted his Parish Saint Vincent de Paul Society's Feed the Hungry program.

Throughout his lifetime Kieran enjoyed family time as well as many activities including camping, gardening, rafting, skiing, running, golfing, beach football, reading and traveling with Marty. He also completed his first Marathon after the age of 60.

He took great pleasure in attending the meets, matches, games, performances, special events, and celebrations of his children and grandchildren. He will be remembered as a man of great integrity who loved his family and faith, was always learning, and answered the call to serve his community.

A Recitation of the Rosary will take place on Friday, December 8th at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, December 9th, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. Both will be held at Our Lady of the Presentation Parish at 4123 Robertson Ave. in Sacramento.

What a beautiful tribute to a wonderful human being. I worked with Dr. Fitzpatrick along with Dr. Scott Johnson in the pediatric oncology dept for many years. He was such a gentle giant, kind, intelligent and compassionate. I am very sorry for your family's loss.

I was just made aware of Fitz´s passing last night. I´m so sorry for your loss. He was just an exemplary man, physician, mentor and leader. Always calm, wise and (in a very good sense) "Fatherly" and "Grandfatherly".

He made such a difference in the life of, literally, THOUSANDS of kids/parents, friends, partners and patients. TRULY a life well-lived! He will be missed by so many.

My condolences on your loss and I KNOW he´s "up there" with the "Big guy"

Kieran J Fitzpatrick was a cherished friend and remarkable individual.

"Fitz" embodied humility and class, serving as the ethical compass for Kaiser Permanente South Sacramento and the TPMG Board of Directors. His one-on-one interactions showcased his wisdom, mentorship, and genuine care. Fitz's holiday gatherings reflected inclusivity and warmth, making each person feel valued.

He was a great friend and mentor to me with impeccable integrity. I frequently ask myself "what would Fitz do?" His exceptional leadership and profound impact will be greatly missed.

Dr. Fitz was very wise, thoughtful, and good. He was quick to forgive without holding a grudge, even when I made a mistake that embarrassed him in front of the entire TPMG Board of Directors. He was a very good man, and a very good leader. I will always cherish his friendship.

'Fitz' as we called him, was my friend, mentor and occasional golf partner for over 40 years. I was not alone in receiving these graces, and will never forget the connection and life model he provided to so many of us. A few times in life, a person stands out to influence and promote the best selves we have in us. Fitz was one of those people.
