Larry Barnard Obituary

Larry passed away on August 4, 2017 at 75 after declining health. He was the only child of Charles (Louie) and Mabel Barnard (Whitcher) born on June 30, 1942 in Ontario, CA. Larry was a 1960 graduate of Chaffey High School and a 1963 graduate of Chaffey College. He married Patsy Ann (Warren) on March 7, 1964; married for 34 years up until her passing in 1998. Larry is survived by his daughters, Dawn Barnard-Dingman and Kimberly Barnard, son-in-law Luke Dingman, grandchildren, Trenton and Corine, several relatives and friends. In 1965, Larry was hired by the Department of Transportation, District 8 (San Bernardino) as a student assistant, in 1968 he transferred to D11 (San Diego), and in 1969 he transferred to Caltrans, Headquarters, Division of Accounting, in Sacramento and retired in 1999 as an Accounting Administrator III. While at Caltrans he developed many life-long friendships, and we are sure that he had a few memorable lunches at Posey's. Larry was notorious for his one-liners and jokes that created many laughs for all. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends, poker nights, camping, bowling leagues (once on TV show Bowling for Dollars), playing cards and pool, wine tasting, light traveling, and he could watch or listen to any amateur or professional sports show on TV or radio from beginning to end. Our dad/pops/grandpa was a loving, fun and wise father and incredible listener, teacher and mentor. We will miss him dearly! We would like to thank Kaiser, Craig Cares, Meals on Wheels, Senior Care Solutions, Hialeah Terrace, Woodcreek Villa, Belle Vie, Pine Creek, First Call Hospice and all the caregivers for providing exceptional care of Larry as well as supporting, listening, and comforting the family through his physical/-cognitive changes. All are invited to Larry's service at Lind Brothers Mortuary (4221 Manzanita Avenue, Carmichael, California 95608) on Wed, August 30, 2017 at 10:00 am, casual attire, luncheon to follow. He will be laid to rest, in a private ceremony, at the Fair Oaks Cemetery, Fair Oaks, CA.

I first met Larry in 1967 or 1968. This was in District 8 when I was visiting and doing my Equipment Shop accounting check ups. Larry and I not only worked together but we partied, treasure hunted with our metal detectors, and with our wives Pat and Jan shared many happy times together. Even after moving to Rockford in 2004 we stayed in touch and talked frequently. Hank Fox, Rockford IL 8/22/2020.

Larry and I both started in District 08 in 1968... Seems so long ago. Larry was always one of the good guys and I enjoyed his friendship and guidance throughout my career at Caltrans. I have thought of Larry often since I left California after retirement. His loss is felt by all who had the privilege of knowing him. My sincere condolences to the family. Rest in peace my friend.

I had the pleasure of caring for Larry, he was such an incredible man with the most amazing sense of humor and one of the biggest brightest smiles I've ever seen! I loved Larry like my own family and I miss him greatly. Thank you to Luke, Dawn, and Kim for allowing me to be apart of your family and to care for your father. I love you all!!! XOXO

Larry and I knew each other for a long time. First met Larry when he worked at the Dist. 08 office in San Bernardino. We became the best of friends. I share your loss Dawn and Kimberly as I just lost my wife Jan on May 4. A fond memory of many. I had lunch with Larry and Marlin Beckwith at Poor Vic's just before I moved to Rockford. I used the Golden 1 ATM that Larry told me Maria C. installed just for him. Larry and I talked many times by phone. As he got more sick Emma Mc kept me informed. My sincere heartfelt condolences to you. Hank Fox, Rockford Il.

I worked for Larry at Caltrans for 10 years through the 1980's. He was the best boss I ever had. He was my mentor and I am forever grateful for the successful career I had as a result of his guidance and leadership. Larry was always in a good mood and a day never passed that he didn't have a good joke to tell. I met his family only once, but it was enough to know what a blessed human being Larry was. Although I lost contact with Larry over 20 years ago, I still think of him often. Rest in peace, my dear friend.
