Leon Weston Obituary

Weston, Lt. Col. Leon B. Lieutenant Colonel Leon B. Weston was born August 9, 1931 and passed away peacefully on June 27, 2015 surrounded by family and special friends. Leon lived a very full, vibrant and satisfying life 100% of the time. Upon passing away he declared "My work here is done. I'm ready to go." Leon was born in Mathews, VA to the late John and Josephine Weston. Preceded in death by his wife of 58 years Dottie Weston, Leon leaves to cherish his memory and carry on his legacy two daughters Lynne Castellanos and Jill Weston; one granddaughter Chantalle Castellanos and one special great grandson "Big Max." He will be greatly missed by his brother Johnny Weston, Sr., sister-in-law Barbara Robinson and many loving nieces and nephews. He is also fondly remembered by his companion Irene Walker. Leon graduated with a BS degree from North Carolina A&T College and received his commissions in the U.S. Air Force as a second lieutenant. He proudly served in the United States Air Force for twenty-two years and was decorated with the Bronze Star, two Air Force commendation medals, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Korean and Vietnamese Campaign Medals. He served as a Base Commander in Vietnam and Germany displaying "superior ambassadorship." Leon was a man of service remaining active in the community after retirement including Oak Park Project Area Committee, Wellsprings Women's Center, Economic Opportunity Advisory Council, Special Olympics, Elk Grove Adult and Community Education, Elk Grove Kiwanis Club, Elk Grove Key Club and hosting foreign exchange students. He was well known for his selfless commitment to help others regardless of the circumstances. Leon cultivated close friendships with people of all ages, from many countries and from all walks of life never judging their beliefs or perspective on life. Leon was an inspiration to all and strangers quickly became friends. Leon truly understood the gift of Life. "Leon had the ability to lift the weight of life." A viewing will be held on Sunday July 12th from 12:00-8:00 p.m. at the Herberger Family Elk Grove Funeral Chapel, 9101 Elk Grove Blvd., Elk Grove CA 95624 with family present from 2:00-5:00 p.m. Services and a reception will be held on Monday July 13th from 10:30 a.m. - 2:45 p.m. at Harvest Church, 10385 E. Stockton Blvd. Elk Grove, CA 95624. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Youth Empowered P.O. Box 344 Solvang, CA 93464; Elk Grove Kiwanis P.O. Box 443, Elk Grove CA 95759; Elk Grove Senior Center 8830 Sharkey Ave., Elk Grove, CA 95624; and/or American Cancer Society Discovery Shop 8470 Elk Grove Blvd. Elk Grove CA 95758. Most days Leon would tell at least a few people, "Today is a good day, every day CAN be a good day." Leon would hope you consider really, really enjoying life.

Col. Weston will be missed! He always provided excellent guidance and advice for younger officers. He was an excellent role model, mentor and set exceptional standards for us and others to follow. With the challenges we faced during our careers, we followed his example. We continue to recommend the Air Force way of life and strive to offer advice rendered by him to others. Lt. Col. and Maj. Wyatt s (USAF, Ret.).

Dad as I affectionately called him, always had a message for me. This message was always profound, meaningful and helpful in resolving an issue or problem. You could always count on his willingness to help others. I will miss him and carry his legacy in my heart.

We knew Leon first, and foremost, as a gentleman. He was always polite, respectful, and modest, despite his very accomplished life. We will be out of state for his services, but rest assured Leon is now in a better place. We are better for having known Leon Weston and thank God for having put him in our lives.
