Lily Chan Obituary

Lily Wong Chan passed away peacefully of natural causes on July 18, 2020 at the age of 89. She was born on September 6, 1930 in Canton, China, and began her life as a girl of five in the foreign land known to Chinese then as "Gold Mountain." Her parents, Harry and Shai Wun Wong, established roots in Sacramento where Lily and future generations of their family could flourish. As the eldest of seven children living in this new land, Lily was the trailblazer who led the way for her grateful siblings. Lily was a kind and devoted daughter and a warmhearted and caring sister, whose love and inspiration enabled them to achieve their dreams. Lily had a long, fulfilling career with the State of California. When she retired, she and John, her husband of nearly 65 years, were fully able to enjoy their retirement together traveling, attending seminars and musicals, being active with the Chan Family Association, and volunteering 26 years with the Jazz Jubilee. Lily delighted in gardening, cooking, cruising, crocheting, and the piano. But her greatest joy was her precious grandchildren on whom she focused her selfless love and endearing care. She loved watching them grow and become successful. Lily always valued Wong Family celebrations and held firmly to family values and honored those enduring traditions throughout her life. Lily is survived by her loving family: husband John, sons Steven (Shirley) and Kendrick (Suzie), grandchildren Justin, Taylor, Trevor and Kyle Chan; and siblings: Janet Chan (William Henry), Julie Fong (Leroy), Gordon Wong (Merrily), Wardon Wong (Lesa), and Ellie Hattori (Rick). She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister Sylvia Fung (Dennis). Lily will be deeply missed and remembered with gratitude for the legacy of generational blessings that she left behind. The family wishes to thank Dr. Reginald Low, Dr. Patricia Takeda, and the medical team at UC Davis Medical Center for Lily's exceptional care. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, a limited viewing will be held at Harry A. Nauman & Son, 4041 Freeport Boulevard, Sacramento on Saturday, July 25, 2020 from 9:00-11:00 a.m., followed by the private graveside service. In Lily's honor, please consider contributing to ACC Rides, 7334 Park City Drive, Sacramento, CA 95831.

Dear Chan family,

We are saddened by your terrible loss. We met Lily through her husband John involvement with the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association. She shared many interesting life stories with us. We often see each other when we sat together at Chinese New Year banquets. We will always remember her telling us about her father's old green panel truck. That reminded us much of her beloved family. She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Our heartfelt condolences,
Freeman and Soo
