William Schmidt, Ph.D.
September 9, 2019
Phil, thanks for sending Lois Jean's obituary. Her dad and my dad were brothers and the two families lived side-by-side just north of Tecumseh, Nebraska. The families both left Nebraska at the tail end of the Great Depression to find jobs and a better life in San Diego. Lois Jean was about ten years older than me, but I remember her growing up in rural Nebraska and later in San Diego. I remember seeing her in her navy uniform and we were all proud of her. I also visited her at the Sacramento Bee when she worked there. After that, our paths separated and we did not get together again. She was a remarkable individual and I learned wonderful new things about her in the obituary. She and I were probably the last remaining children of the original six Schmidt brothers from Columbus, Nebraska and that makes her passing especially sad. I extend my condolences to her son Phil and all other family members.
