Marjorie Mae McKee

February 6, 1926 - December 23, 2023

Davis, California - In Loving Memory of Marjorie Mae McKee

Marjorie Mae (Sagehorn) McKee, peacefully departed this earthly life on December 23, 2023, at the age of 97 after a brief battle with lung cancer. She was born on February 6, 1926, in Bismarck, North Dakota, to the late Eldor and Jane Sagehorn. They, along with her two brothers Eldor Jr. and Hank lived in Stanton, North Dakota until Marge was 13 years old. The family then relocated to Long Beach, California. She attended Long Beach Polytechnic High School and graduated from the University of California at Los Angeles in 1948 with a degree in Physical Education.

During college and in the summers Marge worked part time as an oral surgeon's assistant to help pay for college. After graduation, her employer asked her to move to Sacramento, California to help him open a new dental practice. It was here Marjorie met George A. McKee, a children's dentist who shared the same building as her employer. They were married in 1953 and spent their three week honeymoon in Hawaii, which continued to be Marjorie and her family's favorite place to visit. They settled in Sacramento where Marjorie spent most of her life raising her three children George Jr., Jane and Nancy. Most summers were spent at the family cabin at Lake Tahoe where fond memories were made swimming, boating, fishing and Jeeping into the back country surrounding the lake. The untimely and sudden death of her husband in 1972 left Marjorie to raise and educate her three teenage children to which she did an outstanding job. Her dedication to their success is a testament to her determination and character.

While her children were in college, Marjorie went back to work as the office manager for a local dentist, George McConnell DDS, and was the bookkeeper for local interior decorator Stuart Toft.

Marjorie had a passion for growing and exhibiting Camellias and for years entered her flowers in the Camellia Society of Sacramento's annual show, winning several ribbons and trophies over the years. She also loved reading, traveling and camping with family and friends.

Marjorie was the last survivor of a close knit group of friends named "Group", which consisted of lifelong friends who regularly held parties, travelled together and kept in touch for decades. Their collective sense of humor was the source of many hilarious stories and antics that are still talked about today.

In 2021 Marjorie decided she wanted to be in an assisted living situation and moved into the Atria Covell Gardens facility in Davis, California. She enjoyed living there and soon met fellow resident Andy Frank. They soon started spending more and more time with each other and their relationship extended somewhere beyond friendship, giving Marjorie a new spark to life.

Left to cherish the memories of Marge's remarkable life are her beloved brother, Henry (Hank) Sagehorn; her devoted son, George McKee; her caring daughter-in-law, Barbara (Blakemore) McKee, her loving daughters, Jane McKee and Nancy McKee; her cherished grandchildren, Alex McKee, Kate McKee, Amanda Hagen, and her treasured great-grandchildren, Logan, Kennedy and Jeremiah McKee. She was preceded in death by her dear father, Eldor Sagehorn, her beloved mother, Jane Sagehorn, her loving husband, George A. McKee and her oldest brother, Eldor Sagehorn Jr.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the Yolo Cares Hospice, who made Marjorie's final days comfortable.

Marge's absence leaves a void in the hearts of all who knew her. Her warm smile, gentle spirit, and unwavering devotion to her loved ones will forever be etched in our memories.

A celebration of life will be planned for next year and close family and friends will be notified of that date.

So, so sorry for your loss. Your Mom was an awesome loving person and you were so lucky to have her in your lives. I still remember the times I spent at your houses in Sierra Oaks and the cabin with Marge welcoming me as one of the family. Take care and all the best

I am uploading a great picture of Marjorie and her Group. She's in her signature straw hat. That generation sure had a fun time.

Your mother had such a beautiful smile and fun to chat with as I went to Dr McConnell and was also classmates with Nancy. My mom hit it off with her too and reading this makes me think it was the connection with North Dakota and then my mom went to Hollywood High in the `40´s. And they were also born the same year. Nice write up and I´m glad she had fun to the end!
