Marvis Smith Obituary

Marvis Rosella Smith, after a long battle with cancer, peacefully passed from this life surrounded by her family on January 13th at her home in Loomis, California. She was 81. Marvis was born January 19, 1936 to Harry and Ruth Swenson on the family farm near Svea, Minnesota. She was a graduate of Willmar High School, Willmar, MN in 1954 and also attended St. Cloud State University. She is survived by her loving husband James P. Smith of 59 years, her daughter Sheryl (Wally) McKinney of Loomis, and her two sons Steve (Lisa) Smith of Colfax CA and Mark (Lisa) Smith of Loomis. She is survived by her precious grandchildren Michelle, Mathew, Michael, Joshua, Casey and Kyle. Marvis is also survived by 3 sisters Doris Hauan, Shirley Tersch and Carolyn Moore. She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Harley Swenson and Donald Swenson, and her sisters Ruth Elaine Nelson and Joyce Manteffeul. Marvis was instrumental in the expansion of the Roseville Arts Center and served as president and a member of the board of directors. She was very active in the church guild at the Lutheran Church of the Resurrection in Granite Bay, CA. Marvis' big joy in life was spending time with her family, especially with her 6 grandchildren. A celebration of Marvis' life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations to either the Lutheran Church of the Resurrection in Granite Bay, CA or the Blue Line Arts in Roseville, CA.

The California Art Education Association would like to extend condolences to the family of Marvis Smith, a true patron of the arts. Many of our members have benefited from Blue Line Arts and it programs and are grateful to people like Marvis who are willing to expend the time, money, and devotion to making visual arts available to so many. The loss of Marvis is a loss to the entire visual arts community.
