Michael Fallon Obituary

Michael in his 90th year died peacefully on March 6. He was surrounded by his much-loved family; wife of 52 years, Rosalind Fallon, daughter Moira (Eric) and sons Shane (Gill) and Barry (Margo). He was the proud grandfather of seven: Cuan, Ronan, Cameron, Lilly, Ashlynn, Eva, and Sonoma. Born in San Mateo, the elder son of the late Thomas and Nellie Fallon, predeceased by his brother Tom. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean conflict. He was a lifelong learner, taking Renaissance Society classes at CSUS, as well as participating in a weekly New Yorker discussion group. Mike received his B.A. in English from UC Berkeley and his Masters in Journalism from Columbia University. He was also a Doctoral candidate at La Sorbonne, Paris in 1955. His childhood dream was to become a journalist. At age 16, he began writing for the Daily Cal at UC Berkeley, the student newspaper, and became their editor during his senior year. As a professional journalist, Mike participated in the rise and fall of printed journalism. He made the ominous proclamation of having written for no less than seven now defunct newspapers. Mike started his journalism career at United Press International at the Sacramento bureau. He worked on the Latin American desk in New York before being assigned as Latin American News Manager in Buenos Aires, 1962-1964. In 1965, as a reporter for the San Francisco Examiner, he was credited with coining the word "hippie". The majority of his journalistic career was spent as Education Writer for the former Sacramento Union, where he was the dean of the California education press corps. Mike lived life to the fullest, with kindness and compassion for all. He will be remembered for his sharp wit and bellowing laugh. He will be greatly missed. Funeral Mass at Immaculate Conception (3263 First Avenue, Sacramento) on Tuesday March 10 at 11am. Wonderful reporter, kind, smart, thoughtful (and I say that as a younger competitor, an education writer for the Sac Bee many moons past, when Sacramento had TWO daily newspapers). . .Such a tremendous legacy.

Mike Fallon was a very respected colleague. UPI trained, Covered his education beat at the Sacramento Union with top flight professionalism. His copy was accurate and comprehensive. He hardly ever missed important first-take reactions on local and state education issues. Mike was part of the Union's Irish contingent whose other main stars included Terry Eagan and Mike O'Connor. Mike always watched my back--literally--his desk was behind mine and he added to our lively newsroom banter with lively, attentive tongue-in-cheek humor. He was, as Ron Roach noted, a complete gentleman. His classy demeanor rose above our ramshackle crew of bombastic showoffs. And we were blessed to have Mike at our Friday old newshound breakfasts for several years. I will dearly miss seeing and chatting with Michael at Sac State Renaissance Society events.

I am sad that my doc won't let me attend. Mike knew how much respect and affection I had for him. I will honor him with a memorial candle and smile, remembering how he'd laugh that laugh when I was levitating over a story. We are all connected forever with that passion. He knew the blessing of being there for us all.--Hilary Abramson

One thing that amazed me about Michael was his dedication to friends. He maintained a 70+ year long friendship with someone from his boyhood days in San Mateo (Brian Kidney, who passed in 2012). Says a lot about a person to maintain that strong of a bond for so long. Rest in peace.

A prince of a reporter and a fine fellow, you will be remembered fondly. You always had kind, patient words for us rookie reporters. Steve Magagnini

Michael was a pro's pro in the newspaper business with all the valued qualities it took to be successful — a balanced temperament, friendly, caring, wise, witty and a tireless worker against our bigger rival at the time, The Sacramento Bee. He was a trooper through and through, a charming yet fierce competitor. His dedication to The Union ran deep despite the challenges of ownership changes and economic struggles. I so remember editors asking Mike to stay late or pitch in because of breaking stories or staff shortages, and he was always quick to help out, usually volunteering before being asked. He was a good listener, open to those perhaps seeking some sage advice or a shoulder to lean on. As retirees long after we parted ways — me, from the sports department — eventually moving to The Bee we remained friends. I so enjoyed the Union reunion functions, where Mike made the rounds, retouching bases with as many people as he could. His ilk is hard to replace, one of those special people who made you feel better just to be in their presence. Prayers and condolences to his family. I was privileged to know and call him a colleage.

A gentleman in a rough and tumble profession. We were all lucky to know and work with him.
