Michael Ratty Obituary

Michael John Ratty October 21, 2014 Chapel Hill, NC Michael John Ratty passed away in a tragic accident on Tuesday October 21, 2014. He died doing what he loves best, flying. His interest in flying began when he worked for his brother-in-law as a crop duster. He got his private pilot's license and to pay for his ratings, he sold airplanes in Hayward, California. His first corporate job was with Kaiser Steel Corporation. He then flew for a regional airline company named Air California, which later merged with American Airlines. He flew for them up until he retired as a Captain flying 777's. His passion for flying was still strong so he started Carolina Barnstormers Corporation. Carolina Barnstormers was a service that gave flying tours around the Triangle as well giving tours in Northern Michigan. The company was based in Durham, at an airstrip called Lake Ridge Aero Park. Out there he shared his passion for flying and teaching with other flying enthusiasts. He is mourned by his wife, Pahnea, his two children, Jon and Jennifer, and loyal animal companions, Lizzie, Lexi, and Pouncer. He is one of nine children who will miss him dearly as well. He made countless friends throughout his years of flying and teaching who will sorely miss him. His memorial service is being planned and will be announced at a later date

Quite simply there could Never be another Mike Ratty.
I owe so much to Mike. He gave me opportunities that are to this day reminding me how lucky I was to know Him.
Mike soloed Me on my 16th Birthday. Mike got me a job at Anthony Aircraft which was an unbelievable experience. When we would ferry a plane Mike would put me in the left seat and let me get the time.
Mike along with the other special People in Aviation gave me my life and I am so grateful. Basically my life is nothing less than a miracle thanks to Mike Ratty.
I will always miss Him and thank Mike and Pahnea for the blessings They bestowed on me.

I only flew with him one time in his Waco but the seventh grader that flew with us went on to become an aeronautical engineer graduating with honors from NCSU and now works for Boeing as an engineer on the dream liner. We share a picture of Michael coming around for a final approach at Henderson airfield and it made a life changing impression.

I am so sorry to learn about Mike leaving us. He was a great guy, always had a smile and a chuckle. I am glad that he continued to do the work he loved, still flying well after his retirement from American.
My condolences to his family who must miss him lots.

I am saddened to read of Mike's passing. We both flew for Kaiser Air out of OAK, but Mike had moved on to AirCal before my arrival there. We had a few social encounters after I was hired by AirCal and I was always impressed by Mike' easygoing attitude and friendliness. It hurts to lose another Airman.........

I was blessed to have known Mike. A poor kid from Hayward Mike inspired me to believe in myself. Mike soloed me on my 16th birthday while I was working at Arrow Aviation. Mike got me a job washing and waxing at Anthony Aircraft when he went to work for Mr. Anthony selling airplanes. I am so lucky to have known him. I called Mike about a month ago just to say hello. I will always be grateful to Mike and all those who have helped me along the way.

Mike was a great pilot and fun to fly with. I was one of Mike's co-pilots at AirCal and flew with him often. Mike got along with everybody. Years ago when I had RDU layovers, Mike would come and have dinner with the crew. I am very sorry to hear of his passing and my condolences to the family.
