Michael Staley Obituary

Michael Edward Staley passed away on July 1, 2014 surrounded by his family after a brief illness. He was born on May 5, 1955 in Greenfield, Indiana and was a loving husband to Deborah and a devoted father to his children Ben and Kimmee. He is also survived by his brother John, his sister Maggie, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father Jacque and his mother Elizabeth. Mike served in the US Navy from 1974 to 1976 travelling the world. He graduated from UC Davis with a degree in Economics in 1980. He eventually settled in Sacramento and worked for the State of California for 19 years, first with the Governor's Office of Emergency Services and then finishing his career at the CaliforniaVolunteers as Assistant Director of Disaster Volunteering and Preparedness. Mike was very active in his community—he was a volunteer firefighter for the Florin Fire District (now Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District) from 1990 to 1994. He was a member of the Florin Japanese American Citizens League and served as a board member and as treasurer. He was a member of St. Anselm of Canterbury Anglican Church. He enjoyed being a lay reader and participating in fellowship and music ministries. His main passion was his family. He participated in YMCA Indian Guides with his children and coached their soccer, baseball, and softball teams. He was actively involved with "Friends of Korea" and enjoyed his children's many performances of Korean dancing and drumming. He loved vacationing with them in Port Townsend, Washington. He also enjoyed hosting holidays and other special occasions at his home with his extended family. Mike had a kind and giving spirit and the biggest heart. He touched so many lives and will be profoundly missed. A Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, July 19, 2014 at 10:00 AM at Peter's Lutheran Church, 8701 Elk-Grove Florin Rd, Elk Grove. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made in his name to St. Anselm of Canterbury Anglican Church http://stanselmanglican.org.

Mike was a beloved friend. I was only able to see him once in the past few years, but I will always cherish the memories of our growing up together as neighbors in Canoga Park. I am truly sorry that I could not make his funeral; my parents are there in my stead. Give my condolences to Maggie and John. My love will always be with his memory.

From San Bernardino County OES, I worked with Mike for many years coordinating our volunteer programs. He was consistently patient and supportive, and more importantly a good friend. I appreciated his love of the State of Washington as I lived there many years ago. Thank you Mike for blessing us with your knowledge, experience and especially your friendship. I will miss you.

I miss you brother. Port Townsend will never be the same but rest assured we will take care of it for you and the family. You always had a positive outlook and I cannot remember anything negative coming out of your mouth. Thank you for the blessing of being my brother-in-law for over 29 years and teaching me so much about life. My thoughts and prayers to your family (Debby, Ben, and Kimmee) and your brother and sister. Say 'hi' to your mom for me.

My sweet friend, you will always hold a place in my heart. You were the one who was always there for me as I grew up - the dad I never had. Our tubing trips down the flumes, jumping off boulders in Feather River, the video arcades, bowling, and so much more. You gave me back the childhood that was taken away from me. Then you married an amazing woman, that accepted me and loved me as well. As I became an adult, you told me how proud you were of me, and what I'd become. You are now receiving your reward, for taking care of that little girl that wasn't yours, before you had your own beautiful family...I am so very grateful for your love and generosity, and I will carry it in my heart forever.
