Michal Duveneck Obituary

Michal John Duveneck

January 15, 1945 - May 5, 2025

Sacramento, California - It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of Michal John Duveneck, aka DUV, and it is with profound love, pride, and respect that we share Mike's incredible life.

Mike was born in Manitowoc, Wisconsin, on January 15, 1945, and passed on May 5, 2025, in Sacramento, California. His parents were Ken and Janice Duveneck. He's the middle of five children, with Dick and Kaye being older and Mary and Ken being younger.

As a child, Mike was smart and kind but very mischievous. He was very close to his parents, siblings, and friends, demonstrating his loyalty to loved ones, which continued throughout his life.

Everyone who knew Mike has a story or two about him, his pranks, his captivating laughter, his loyalty, and his passion for life. He loved to dance and showed an interest in politics at a young age.

Mike attended St. Catherine's Grade School and Pius XI High School. He then attended Oshkosh University. In 1974 Mike moved from Wisconsin to California to pursue his academic dreams. He earned his master's degree from California State University, Sonoma in 1976.

But Mike's life story was not just about academics. It was also a love story. Fate brought Mike and Sandra Tyson together at a co-ed softball competition, and their love blossomed. In 1980, they sealed their bond of marriage, and in 1983, they welcomed their beloved son Michal Scott Duveneck into their lives.

Mike was also blessed with a daughter, Beth Tegtmeier, her husband, Paul, and two granddaughters, Alyssa and Kim.

Throughout the years, Mike, Sandra, and Michal remained a close-knit family and fostered deep connections with the growing Duveneck and Tyson families and their circle of friends. Countless parties, vacations, and get-togethers were the fabric of their rich social life.

In 1985, Mike achieved another academic milestone that further defined his path. He earned his PhD from the Professional School of Psychology in San Francisco.

During this time, he also worked for the State of California Department of Health (Adult Health Care Program), where he initiated and successfully operated a program dedicated to helping seniors and disabled adults stay in their homes rather than relocating into facilities.

Continuing his commitment to making a difference, Mike later joined Kaiser Permanente as a licensed Clinical Psychologist, ascending to the position of Chief Psychologist for an impressive five-year tenure.

Beyond his professional roles, he generously shared his knowledge and passion as a California State University, Sacramento professor, mentoring and motivating countless students. In addition to his academic and clinical work, Mike also ran a private practice.

In the wake of the tragic events of 911, Mike's compassion and expertise led Kaiser Permanente to choose him to aid the victims of New York City. He applied his skills and expertise to provide support and solace to those in need. Throughout his career, a common thread was his unwavering dedication to caring for and assisting those facing adversity.

Mike's interests were as diverse as they were fun. When he traveled to Israel, he embarked on a pilgrimage, meticulously documenting his experiences. Those fortunate enough to know him received the gift of his captivating audio journals, allowing them to share in his adventures.

Mike's commitment to making a positive impact went far beyond his professional roles. He was actively involved in local, state, and federal politics, volunteering his time and energy to various causes. Notably, he dedicated himself to President Obama's campaign and even ran for local office twice, demonstrating his unwavering belief in the power of democratic participation.

In addition to his political endeavors, Mike served on the Sacramento Metro Fire Board, contributing to the safety and well-being of his community. He also played a vital role on the Children's Commission for the County of Sacramento, further highlighting his dedication to the welfare of the young and vulnerable in our society.

When it came to leisure and relaxation, Mike's hobbies were as eclectic as they were enjoyable. Whether it was a round of golf, tending to his garden, cruising on his motorcycle, mastering the piano, delving into a good book, taking walks around the neighborhood with Sandy, indulging in a well-deserved nap, or savoring a glass of Scotch in his peaceful backyard, Mike knew how to savor life's simple pleasures.

In celebrating Mike's life, we can all recognize not only his academic achievements, deep bonds with family and friends, and selfless contribution to society but also his vibrant and well-rounded personality. His passion for politics, his commitment to community service, and his mischievousness and laughter have left an indelible mark. His legacy inspires us to embrace our passions, cherish our loved ones, and give generously to others.
