Nancy James-Algren Obituary

Nancy Kim James-Algren

September 22, 1946 - September 27, 2024

Meadow Vista, California - Kim was born to Elmer and Dorothy Hornof on September 22, 1946, in Berkeley, California. She passed on 27 September 2024, leaving behind her beloved husband of 38 years, Ted, her sister Stacy Porter of Colfax, her stepchildren Todd and Kiersten and stepdaughter-in-law Rachel, all in the Bay Area, multiple nieces, nephews, and grandchildren, and many, many friends spread far and wide.

Kim grew up in Auburn, California, and lived there until the first half of her freshman year at Placer High School. The family moved to Salinas, California in 1960, where she graduated from Salinas High School and Hartnell Junior High School. After moving back to Sacramento, she began her long pursuit of obtaining her college degree (attending night classes only and working during the day), culminating in her journalism and art history degree. Kim obtained her law degree from McGeorge School of Law in 1980 (again attending night school), making the dean's list many times.

Kim married her perfect match, Ted, who she met while skiing in Tahoe in 1977. However, before joining him in Los Gatos, California, she chose to finish obtaining her law degree. She was a successful insurance defense litigator in Los Altos for over 35 years. Her cases required travel around the United States and to Europe for depositions. She served on the Board of Directors for the Northern California Association of Defense Counsel for two years in the 1990s.

Upon retirement, Kim and Ted moved to Winchester Country Club in Meadow Vista, CA. As an avid golfer, Kim served on the Board of Directors for the Women of Winchester's Golf Group for three years, ultimately becoming its Captain. She continued her volunteer efforts and became a member of the Board of the Northern California Women's Golf Association, ultimately becoming President of more than 11,000 members in 2017.

Besides golf, Kim loved to travel. In 1980, she spent a summer in Austria studying international law, which ignited her "wanderlust." She continued traveling throughout her life and visited more than 61 countries. Kim thrived on being active and had a true passion and love for life and for her family and friends. Her positive attitude, smile, and sense of humor will be missed by all.

I was so sorry to hear of Kim´s passing. She was so vibrant and full of life that it is difficult to imagine that bright light has gone out. Her many interests and hobbies not only brought her joy, but made her an entertaining and engaging companion. I know that she loved the life she built with Ted and her family and her passing makes life a little less bright for all who knew her. Please accept my sincere condolences.
