Oma Lee Obituary

LEE, Oma Newberry
A Georgia peach, Oma Newberry Lee was born on September 26, 1926, in Atlanta and she passed quietly away on July 14, 2009, at Mercy Hospital. As a young girl she picked cotton, and shot squirrels and opossum while hunting with her dad. Popular in school she was still friends with many of her high school classmates. She met her beloved James L. Lee in South Carolina and rode the train to Reno to marry him when he came home from World War II. She was active in many things as a young woman, and even though rheumatoid arthritis slowed her down in later years she and James traveled a lot. She has gone to be with him now just two months since his passing, the longest time they spent apart. She leaves behind two daughters, Mary Grose and Patricia Lee; three grandchildren, Leah Grose, Michelle Ackerman, and Joy Webb; seven great-grandchildren, Richard and Alicia Ortega, Kira Ackerman, Greg, Shelina and Diamond Buford, and baby James Webb. Family and friends are invited for a visitation for Oma Lee Lee on Monday, July 20, from 1:00 - 5:00 p.m., and funeral service on Tuesday, July 21, at 11:00 a.m., both at SACRAMENTO MEMORIAL LAWN,.

I haven't seen Oma Lee since the early 1960s, when she was my Camp Fire Girl leader, but have always remembered her, and with great fondness. Those difficult days I seldom truly connected with people, so it would surprise me if anyone remembered. Oma's influence remains however. Though I wasn't in the group long, and hadn't been long in my Blue Bird group before that leader moved away, CFG activities and imagery helped bridge/heal gaps in my family life. I cried to read she had died. A picture she took of me in 1962 is one of the very few good ones, I think because the person taking it saw me in a good light. Things learned in Camp Fire lore cropped up throughout my life--from my attire in the old hippy days and general identification with Native Americans and pioneers, to an early and enduring concern for the environment as well as a deep solace in the connectedness of all nature, my 1st forays into researching family history--maybe even my obsession with collecting beads! Thank you, Oma. My condolences to your family. It looks like you led a fulfilled life and lived a true love story. I hope so. I wish I'd known you better and longer, but life is a swift stream with so many branches.

from a Christmas poem, "Fairy Faces," by Anonymous, 1907, found on a CFG website,

These the deep, tender records,

Sacred in all their meetness,

That, wakening purest fancies,

Soften us with their sweetness;

Thank you, and WOHELO,
