Patricia Burnham Obituary

Patricia Gail Burnham

December 27, 1942 - March 12, 2024

Fair Oaks, California - Patricia Gail Burnham, known affectionately as "Gail," passed away on March 12, 2024 leaving behind a legacy of passion, expertise, and love for dogs. Born on December 27, 1942, in San Francisco, Gail spent much of her life in the greater Sacramento area, including Fair Oaks and Rocklin.

Gail was one of the first-ever female engineering graduates from the University of California, Davis. Her professional journey as a licensed mechanical and civil engineer at McClellan Air Force Base and her tenure with the Army Corps of Engineers reflected her dedication to her craft. However, it was her profound connection with dogs that truly defined her life's work and contributions.

Renowned as an author, Gail penned the enduring classic "Playtraining Your Dog" in 1981, which has continued to impact dog owners for over forty years. Her latest work, "Treats, Play, Love," showcases her accumulated wisdom and innovative approach to dog training, emphasizing positive reinforcement and the joy of bonding with our furry companions. Gail also regularly contributed expert articles to esteemed publications like AKC Gazette, Dog World, and Dog Fancy.

Gail's dedication to the betterment of greyhounds was not confined to words on a page; Gail's influence extended into the world of greyhound breeding, showing, training, and judging. Her expertise extended to judging and training for Conformation, Obedience, Tracking, and Lure Coursing, where her discernment and knowledge left an indelible mark. She defied misconceptions about greyhounds as pets, advocating for their adoption and demonstrating their exceptional qualities through her own experiences.

Gail's legacy lives on through her sister Lorraine Belmont, Lorraine's children Christine Hatch Santi and Kenneth Hatch, and her nieces Alison Manchester, Marianne Manchester, and Lisa Slocum. She was preceded in death by her sister, Lynn Manchester, and by her parents, Gladys and Lyman Burnham. Gail's impact on the world of dog training and Greyhound advocacy will continue to inspire and educate for generations to come.

In honoring Patricia Gail Burnham's memory, let us remember her as a trailblazer, a compassionate advocate for animals, and a beloved member of her community. She leaves behind a legacy of kindness, knowledge, and boundless love for our four-legged friends. Gail was a co-worker and a very dear friend. We worked together at the Sacramento District, Corps of Engineers, and we kept in touch once we both retired. I will be forever grateful for her caring and support during a very difficult time in my life. My thoughts and prayers go out to all others who knew and loved her too. She will be remembered and missed. Bless you, Gail.
