December 25, 1936 - December 23, 2020
Sparks, Nevada - Ray L. Root was born Dec. 25, 1936 and passed on Dec. 23, 2020 at 83. Ray was preceded in death by Joella Root (Taylor) his wife of over 45 years. Ray is survived by his children, Randy, Deborah Knoche(Bill), Robin Sahota and Patrick Sahota (Christina). Ray was the loving Grandfather of Randi, Savannah, Jacob, Christian and Isabella. He also had 3 great grandchildren.
Born in San Francisco, later moving to Sacramento and residing there until living joining the US Navy in 1955. Ray served aboard the USS Shangri-La and visited many exotic ports, Japan being his favorite. After an honorable discharge Ray returned to Sacramento where he worked for Aero-jet until 1964. He then joined the Sacramento Sheriffs Department. After being promoted to Detective, Ray worked many high profile cases including the East Area Rapist. Upon retiring Ray and Joella moved to Maui, where Ray joined the Maui P.D as a Civil Investigator. In 1988 Ray and Joella moved to Rio Linda, California and resided there until Joella's passing in 2018. Ray moved to Sparks, Nevada where he lived until his death. Ray was a lifelong 49ers fan and member of the 711 Club. He loved Afghan Hounds and a good Gin Gimlet. He will be missed.
Graveside services will be held at Sylvan Cemetery, 7401 Auburn Blvd., Citrus Heights, California. On Friday, April 2, 2021 at 12:30 pm. Afterwards there will be a gathering at his daughters home in Roseville. In lieu of flowers please donate to the Afghan Rescue of Southern California, https://ahrsc.org/.
