Richard Lewallyn Obituary

Richard Lewallyn
November 12, 1963 - July 17, 2022
Sacramento, California -
Richard was born November 12, 1963 to Nelson and Marna Lewallyn, and left this earth to be with his Lord Jesus Christ July 17, 2022. Richard grew up in Sacramento and attended Foothill Junior High School and Foothill High School
Rich was always very active in sports and as a young man he swam for the Foothill Farms Sea Otters and the American River Patriots. During his time in Junior High he wrestled for the school team and in High School he lettered not only in Baseball, but also in Tennis and Swimming. However, his great love was always his Art. The 1983 Senior Class Mascot was a Unicorn and Rich was chosen to paint the 20 foot Unicorn on the side of the school building.
Richard's next stop was American River College after which he was off to Pasadena to attend the Art Center College of Design, where he graduated in 1988 with a Bachelor of Science in Fine Arts (BSFA). Richard received many awards for his art including the 1982 "Robert Matsui" Congressional Award winner, album cover for the XTC Group, Poster Winners for Tokyo-Osaka Arts, Pasadena Symphony, Pasadena Drug-Alcohol Abuse, and the California Music Theater.
Rich was always hard working, and as a child he mowed lawns for 10 neighbors. In high school he worked for Raley"s, and he subsequently became a Master Butcher working for Vons, Whole Foods, and Trader Joe's.
Rich loved life and he will always be remembered for his love of skiing, his Hobby Cat sailing and racing, his ping pong skills, and what Rich considered his best ever gill prepared chicken kabob's, but what we will all cherish is the beautiful art he left behind. His paintings, mosaics, and lovely stepping stones.
Richard was preceded in death by his mother Marna. He is survived by his wife, Chris Yee Lewallyn, his son, Sean, a junior at California Baptist University, his father and mom, Nelson and Marion Pace-Lewallyn, Marion's children Paul Pace and Katie Pace Salidas (George), brothers Bill Lewallyn (Karen) and Chris Lewallyn (Liz), nephews Kevin Lewallyn (Annalee) and Alexander Salidas, nieces Shirley Toller (Trey), Lindsey Lewallyn, Tiffany Lewallyn, and Madeline Salidas, and two great nieces, Sophia Lewallyn and Laken Toller
Services will be held at East Lawn Chapel, 5757 Greenback Lane, August 12, 2022, visitation from 10:00-11:00 AM, Service will begin at 11:00 AM.

I learned much later that Rich had passed, so I am remiss and apologize for my late entry. Fellow Art Center alumni & friends Neil Hannum and Dave (Gaz) Peterson send their condolences as well. I met Rich early on as fellow graphic design student Neil had him as a roommate and we were the only three NorCal students in our class. Later on I found out Rich and I had swam competitively as kids, Rich swimming for his team from the Foothill Farms area of Sacramento, and I being on the Davis Aquadarts. Stranger too, we both found out our Dad´s had tried giving us honey before a race!

The other affinity I shared with Rich who was an illustration major, was we were both artists at heart. He encouraged me to step out of the confines of my constrictive major and try the annual poster contests and illustration master workshop events the school periodically held. His apartment was also a source of inspiration and refuge, with a variety of interesting uncommon plants and always an elaborate fish take that was both colorful and a source of tranquility.

Rich had a never ending zeal for life, and although sometimes he tested the limits, he offered an outlet for the pressure of such a demanding school. If it wasn´t out on the town in 80´s L.A., or student or artist party, it was the very stress relieving fun of sailing his catamaran in Long Beach. We certainly covered a lot of ground and had some crazy memories!

Rich was very talented and always exploring new techniques and researching other artists. His extensive range of color and materials expanded the limits of my imagination. Excuse the pun, but my life was "Richer" for knowing him, and as he has sailed away to the great beyond, I´m sure he is still creating endlessly from his colorful palette.

Richie´s unexpected passing is more than just sad; it´s a cruel occurrence. My heart goes out to you, Nelson, and also to your family. It gives me solace to think of him now with his mom. Love, Ann
