Richard Albert Markstein

March 29, 1939 - December 24, 2023

Auburn, California - Markstein, Richard Albert died on December 24, 2023 in Auburn, CA at the age of 84. He had a fulfilling and adventurous life that he shared with dedicated friends and family. Born in Albany, CA in 1939, he graduated from Acalanes High School and San Jose State College in the bay area. Richard was awarded 'Athlete of the Year' in 1957, his senior year; having lettered in Football (quarterback), Baseball (2nd Baseman), Basketball (guard), and Track (sprinter). The grandson of German immigrants, his family established the Markstein Beverage Co. in 1919. After finishing college, he worked for the family business throughout Alameda and Contra Costa County. Richard, along with his brothers Ken and Steve, went on to become business partners operating and managing beverage and snack food distribution companies throughout San Diego and Sacramento Counties. Richard also founded and operated Adolph Markstein & Sons Trucking Co., a California state wide logistics company. He retired in 1999. Most know that Richard was an avid fisherman and duck hunter. He was the proud owner of the Jackpot and North Fork Ranches, outside of Marysville, where he spent as many relaxing days as life allowed. His home in Tahoe was also a source of enjoyment, where he and his wife led an outdoor lifestyle of boating, skiing, and fishing. Toward his later years, Oregon and Wyoming became his favorite fly-fishing destinations. Auburn was Richard's home with Pearl, his wife of 37 years, and her daughter Adrienne in Meadow Vista. He is survived by two sons, Derek of Auburn and his wife Shelley, and Jason of Sacramento; three grandchildren Logan, Sophia, and Bradley, and his brothers Steve and Ken. Richard was a loving and generous brother, husband, father, and grandfather. He will be fondly remembered and missed by his family and lifelong friends.

Rich was quite a guy! Went to Acalanes with him. His first wife, Barbara was in our wedding. Our condolences to Pearl.
