We miss this great man. Richard was so easygoing and ready to share his knowledge through conversation and his wonderful books and art. We loved spending time browsing and selecting our favorite art books and even purchased a limited edition lithograph by José Luis Cuevas--given to Richard by his daughter. Yesterday we purchased an oil pastel drawing by Irving Marcus that we believe to be an abstract drawing of Richard Press. We purchased it from Amatoria Fine Art Books who are now the fortunate owners of Richard's legendary bookstore...they are doing a wonderful job of honoring his memory.

I met Richard just before I moved to Sacramento from the Bay Area. A friend told me about his art bookstore and, from the moment I entered, I knew I'd found a home. It was perfect--a tired couch, a sagging armchair, classical music. There were faded rugs of Persian splendor, Tiffany lamps , small tables and Wilhelm, a fat friendly cat. Books went from floor to ceiling, spilled across the tables and even formed a neat alphabetical pile in the tiny kitchen sink. A sweet, irascible man was seated at the desk. Richard. In the eleven years that I lived in Sacramento, Richard's bookstore was my home away from home.
Richard and I became friends from the first and, over the years, better friends. In the summers when he went to France to visit Talya, buy books or whatever, he gave me a key to the bookstore, so I could hang out with Wilhelm, listen to the music, read the books and wallow in a sense of peace and place.
I loved our teas and talks, arguing and laughing and books, books, books. He was the most wonderful man in the world and easily, the most impossible. I loved him dearly and will miss him every day from now to forever.
Rest in Peace, Dear Friend.
