Robert Churchill
June 15, 1923 - July 8, 2021
Citrus Heights, California - Robert Claude Churchill, a 59-year resident of Citrus Heights, entered into eternal rest at age 98. Bob was born to Katherine J. (Plancich) Churchill and Claude D. 'Jack' Churchill and raised in Portland, Oregon. He attended Hosford Elementary School and Franklin High School where he excelled at baseball and served as Student Body President as a Senior in 1941. He attended Oregon State College, earning a bachelor's degree in Education in 1948 and a master's degree in 1954. He was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. As a collegian, he was a baseball mainstay at 3rd base for the Beavers in 1942, 1943 and 1947. Bob enlisted in the Navy while at OSC and was trained as a pilot and air navigator. He saw duty as an Ensign during WWII aboard the USS Lake Champlain CV-39 during Operation Magic Carpet.
He began his lifelong career as an educator in Monroe, Oregon for two years followed by three years in Toledo and then in Waldport where he was Principal of the High School for six years. Moving to the Sacramento area in 1959, he taught mathematics at Rio Linda and Foothill Farms Junior High Schools, retiring in 1988 after 40 years in education. He was a long-time member of the Northern California Officials Association and officiated hundreds of local high school football, basketball and baseball games. Always interested in athletics, he played Golden Seniors Softball until the remarkable age of 83.
Devoted husband of 64 years to Kathryn 'Kay' (Farrington) Churchill who predeceased him at age 84 in 2011; brother of J. Allen Churchill who predeceased him at age 86 in 2011; Survived by son Robert A. Churchill (Leah) of Fair Oaks and daughter Mary Churchill of Santa Rosa; grandchildren Karen Garcia (Joel) of Yuba City, Robert J. Churchill (Kassie) of Fair Oaks, and Karey Hansen (Kirk) of Fair Oaks; great-grandchildren Maria, Alexander, and Sophia Garcia, Robert M. and William Churchill, and Lenora Hansen; and step-children Diane Schlack of Beaverton, OR and John Reichlein (Judy) of Fernley, NV.
Bob was a wonderful family man, a friend to all who shared his path in life, a great story-teller, and always of good humor. He is missed very much.

What I remember most vividly about Mr. Churchill and his wife Kay were their kindness and generosity to me as a young boy and later as a young man. Their son Bob was a childhood friend and fellow baseball lover and the Churchill house was the closest one to our ballfield. Hospitality there was always warm and, so importantly to me, genuine. Thanks to the family for being such a great reinforcing example (my own mom and dad were my first) of what loving your neighbor looks like. Bob, there were tears when I read this obit this morning when I was Google searching OSU baseball and you. I don't think I knew until today that your dad was 30 years ahead of you at 3rd base. May you be well in all ways.
