Robert Miller Obituary

Robert (Bob) Lee Miller

March 28, 1931 - August 25, 2024

Sacramento, California - Robert (Bob) Lee Miller, a beloved Sacramento artist, passed away peacefully on August 25, 2024, at the age of 93.

Bob was born in Modesto, California, to Pierce A. Miller, a prominent peach farmer, and Mae (Bomberger Swope) Miller, a dedicated teacher. While farming did not capture his interest, Bob discovered his love for art at an early age. With the support of his family, he pursued his passion, earning a bachelor's degree in art from San Jose State University. This marked the beginning of a highly successful career as a graphic artist, all the while developing his talent in the fine arts.

In 1955, Bob began his graphic design career in Sacramento as the first Art Director of KCRA Channel 3. He later worked for Fred Wade Advertising before founding his own graphic design business, Bob Miller Design, in the 1970s. Over his 50-year career in graphic design, he created iconic logos for prominent local businesses, including Crystal Creamery, River City Bank, and Blue Diamond Almonds, as well as many others that have become part of the fabric of Sacramento.

Bob was deeply involved in the Sacramento arts community. He served on the boards of the Crocker Art Museum and the Sacramento Discovery Museum, was a founding member and president of the Art Directors and Artists Club of Sacramento, and contributed to the Fred Wade Scholarship Committee of the Sacramento Ad Club. In recognition of his contributions, he was honored as Sacramento's Ad Man of the Year in 1980.

Bob was also a fine artist whose work was widely shown throughout the Sacramento art scene. Over the years, he worked in his light-filled home studio, creating watercolor and acrylic paintings. In his later years, he focused particularly on capturing Sacramento scenes such as The Alhambra Theater, Tower Theater, and the Tower Bridge. His whimsical drawings of "Wind-in-the-Willows" characters adorn the River Walk along the east side of the Sacramento River, south of the historic Tower Bridge. His mural depicting Sacramento pioneers graces the tunnel connecting Old Sacramento to the K Street Mall. Art was Bob's true passion, and he approached each day with enthusiasm, always inspired to create.

Bob led a life full of adventure with his wife of 75 years, Anita, his high school sweetheart and the love of his life. Together, they traveled extensively throughout England, Europe, and Mexico. He is survived by Anita and their five children: Gayman Wong, Mike Miller (Linda), Dan Miller, Van Miller (Katherine), and Meredith Smith (Tim); six grandchildren: Chelsea, Holly, Andrew, Karen, Olivia, and Emma, and many lifelong friends. Bob will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

The Miller family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all the caregivers for their dedicated loving care and for making Bob's last days comfortable.

A celebration of Bob's life will be held later this year.

What an incredible fifteen years we shared during the time when and you and Anita separated. I just came across the loving pages you wrote for my 70th Birthday Book. It included a photo of the cutout of you that sat in my living room for years that I sent back to you from Ithaca. Such a love as ours comes along very rarely but you ended up back where you were supposed to be with your family and I too needed to be free of the magnificent US. At last, you are at peace.

During teen years traveled with Bob to San Francisco during his dating of Anita. What a choice couple and a dear friend.

Hello,
I am sorry for your incredible loss. Bob had a booth next to me at the crocker holiday arts and crafts shoe about ten years ago. I truly enjoyed conversing with him over the couple of days we spent selling our art to the public. He was funny and welcoming and easy to talk to. I did purchase one of his prints and it is proudly hanging in my home in fair Oaks. I am sad to hear of his passing and wished I could have shared a few moments more with him. I will enjoy his painting on the Sacramento river, as it holds my memories for the last 51 years of my life.

Dear Anita, Van, Meredith, Mike, Gayman and Dan,
I just found out that dear Bob left this world, and can't imagine how much you must miss him.
He was one of those few special people you are lucky to meet in life. A generous, endearing, optimistic, creative and delightful person. He, and you all, have always had a special place in my heart, and will remain so, forever. Sending you much love and big hugs, Monique.

My deepest condolences to all of Bob's family. My Mom Alice Jean grew up in Empire and knew Bob and his family since she was a little girl. They were lovely people. I got to know Bob in the last 20 years. He was a wonderful man and artist. I have a number of his paintings on my walls. I will miss him greatly.

My condolences to the family on their loss. I am so glad that I was able to meet Bob through family celebrations. Those were fun times with a lot of interesting topics of conversation with a wonderful group of people. I was in awe of Bob's artistic talent after I viewed some of his paintings that my dear friend Gayman (aka Mouse) showed me. I imagine he is creating beautiful sunsets and sailboat/harbor scenes, among others, for us to see here on earth.

My heart goes out to Bob´s family in the loss of a great father, grandfather and friend.
I am so sad to hear about Bo´s passing who was my dear friend and mentor. I worked with Bob for about 15 years starting at Wade Advertising and when Bob went on his own creating Bob Miller Design. I will always be grateful to have such a wonderful mentor and friend. I will dearly miss him. RIP Bob...with great respect and love, Gale

I knew Bob Miller through his daughter, Meredith, my sister-in-law. I saw him at occasional family get-togethers and and enjoyed sitting around the table with him and Anita talking about current issues and having some good laughs. It was only recently, however, right before his passing, that I realized what a gifted and brilliant artist he was. When visiting a Sacramento art studio with a friend I asked if there were any of Bob's paintings and was told they just sold the last one they had. So I went on his website and was in awe of his work which included some beloved Sacramento landmarks. Among many others, his artistic legacy will endure for family, friends and strangers alike to enjoy and treasure.

I had the privilege of getting to know Bob when we worked together on fundraisers supporting the Sacramento Children's Home. He was generous, gifted, and kind. I am proud to have an original Bob Miller Sacramento River Scene on my wall. He had some great stories!

I am saddened to read of Bob´s passing. I knew him in Empire Elementary School, as he was the older brother of Bill, my classmate. My husband and I attended many of his Art shows in the last few years. Bob was always proud to introduce me to his friends as the `person he had known longer than others´. Did research for Bill´s book and it was delivered to me by Bob.
Anita, I am so sorry to learn of his passing. Plz let me know if the memorial when the time comes. Lovingly, Becky G. Cole

Sympathy to his family. I knew Bob and Anita years ago through my friend Paula. Lives full of talent, intellect, compassion, and humor. Wish there were even more like them. They were models for many.

I remember Bob from my childhood he was th guy at the end of the street wit a bunch of kids, and we kids played together. I went trick or treating with his son Mike for several years. He was gracious and caring. And gave me one of his watercolor paintings of Mt. Ritter which I display in my home almost 50 years later.
I´m so glad that he was around as I grew up in Sacramento.
