Ryan Tetlow Obituary

July 11, 1945- December 23, 2016 Concord, CA After visiting Cuba in March 2016 and enjoying a holiday with his grandkids in St. George, Utah, Ryan Douglas Tetlow was diagnosed with Stage IV melanoma August 20, 2016 and succumbed on December 23, 1016 at the age of 71. Ryan was born to Carmel (Beardslee) Tetlow (dec.) and George H. Tetlow (dec.) in Sacramento, CA. He grew up in the city and graduated from CSU-Sacramento, majoring in Business Administration. His long career was in accounting and finance and culminated in several Controller positions in the S.F. Bay Area. He served in the US Army in Viet Nam and returned home in 1969 to marry his surviving wife of 47 years, Kem (Masten) Tetlow. Ryan was an active father of their two boys, Barrett Tetlow and Alex Tetlow and enjoyed many sports with them, including baseball, swimming, skiing, hunting, scuba diving and hiking. He was also an avid 49ers football fan, having season tickets from 1979 to 2013. Ryan retired in 2003 and, with his wife Kem, visited all seven continents, enjoying many unusual adventures. Asked about his favorite trip, he'd answer "the next one!" Ryan is survived by his siblings Gail (Lou) McCormick of Georgetown, TX, Lynn and Brent Tetlow of Sacramento, CA and Kyle Tetlow of Orangevale, CA, his sons Barrett and wife Julianna (Chick), Alex and wife Kylie (Blackard) and grandchildren Andrew, Ethan (and arriving later this year, Nicholas), numerous cousins, aunts, uncle, in-laws, nieces and nephews, many in Northern California. He also enjoyed helping people with finances or smart purchases and informally "adopted" an extended family. These include extra son John Brehmer and partner Kara Kahler, extra daughter You Hu and extra niece Ami Dou and extra grandson Eric Deng, plus his extra brother Doug Sandy and his wife Paulette and 35 plus year friends Bill and Sharon Neuman. All provided amazing support throughout his illness. A "Celebration of Life" service will be held on Saturday, February 25, 2017 at 2 pm at the First Unitarian Church of Oakland, 685 14th Street, Oakland, CA. In lieu of flowers, please consider contributions to Cancer Support Community, 3276 McNutt Ave Walnut Creek, CA 94597 (cancersupport.net)
