Shirley Hicks Obituary

Shirley Hicks
February 12, 1930 - December 28, 2021
Citrus Heights, California - Shirley Alene Hicks
Shirley was born Shirley Alene Smith to Charles and Paquita Smith in Wilcox, Arizona on February 12, 1930. She died peacefully at her home in Citrus Heights on December 28, 2021. She was married to her beloved husband, Gerald Werner Hicks, on February 14, 1953. Shirley is survived by her children: Deborah Twilla, Gerald Hicks, Michelle DeMello and Lauren Gary; her grandchildren: Sean, Seth, Shane, Toby, Brittany, Lillian, Brooke, Delany, Bailey, Sam, Casey and Amelia; and her great grandchildren: Grace, Alexandra, Chloe, Charles, Bennett, Violet and Camden.
Shirley attended Arizona State University, graduating with a Bachelor of Art's degree in music. Though primarily raising her four children, Shirley also taught high school music in the Sacramento area. Her two great loves – family and music – filled her life. She could often be heard playing the piano at home and occasionally singing or yodeling. Shirley was a long-time member of the Citrus Heights Methodist Church where she directed and performed for many years in the choir. As a member of Eastern Star, she directed the California state choir and was named the statewide Grand Organist. The family is immensely grateful to the many caregivers, including DD and Mere, who took such great care of Shirley. In memory of Shirley, the family requests that any donations be made to the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital (1-800-805-5856) or to the COPD Foundation (1-800-316-COPD).
