Steve Benson Obituary

Steve Benson, one of Sacramento's finest men's clothing store owners, who enjoyed a decades-long career in the retail industry, died on September 9 at the age of 76.

A respected retailer with an elevated taste level, was a kind and caring person with a generous spirit. He possessed a passion for customer service and providing quality goods.

Steve graduated from Luther Burbank High School and continued his education at U C Davis where he earned a fine arts degree. His retail career began with a part-time job at Weinstock's department store. He next was employed by Irwin Clothing Co., where he remained for over 20 years, learning the clothing business from his mentor and establishing himself as a personal clothier to many of Sacramento's discerning and influential people. Through these interactions numerous friendships developed. In 1995, Steve established S. Benson & Co. Fine Men's Clothing in East Sacramento. The shop was popular for its boutique feel and exceptional clothing assortment. Steve was celebrated for his old-school customer service, his phenomenal memory of customer's purchases, and his expertise in designing custom clothing. His loyal and multi-generational client base is a testament to his dedication and experience.

Beyond his professional life, Steve served on the board of the Sacramento Children's Home, supported his son's activities at Christian Brothers High School and enjoyed attending local live theater. Among his favorite things: an ice cold gin martini, reading the Sunday New York Times, 4th of July spent at Brockway Springs, films at Tower Theater and gathering with family and close friends.

Steve is survived by his loving wife, Susan Oaks Benson, and son, Alexander Oaks Benson; brothers, Mark Benson (Wendy), Eric Benson (Karri), and in-laws Steven Oaks (Debbie) and David Oaks (Petra). Steve was a beloved uncle to his nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Steve's memory may be made to Sacramento Children's Home, Christian Brothers High School or ALS Association.

I´ll remember Steve as someone who helped me get prepped to re-enter the workforce after an extended illness. He was welcoming and knowledgeable, and I got to know first-hand why he was a Sacramento institution. May his memory be a blessing.

I met Steve at Parkway Elementary School in second grade in September 1955. We shared a double desk so I guess becoming friends was inevitable. We remained friends through high school and college. During those years, especially college years, we shared great and times and parties. After college we both went are separate ways but I shall always remember him as a good buddy growing up. My condolences to his wife, son, and brothers.

I´m so sad to hear of Steve´s passing. I was just calling the store to ask him for some advice and it was disconnected. Thank you so much Steve for all of the advice in general and regarding our wedding. I really wanted to show you how it turned out but I am so thankful you helped us and gave Jack some fashion advice too. We love you!

I was so sad to learn about Steve´s passing today; he was truly one of the great people I knew. Steve was a kind and gentle soul who cared (too much!) about his customers, made friendships easily, and made all of us feel that we were the most important person in the room. I miss you, Steve. You made our lives better.

Steve was a true gentleman. So kind and thoughtful. I knew him when I was writing about fashion in the '80s and '90s. It was an honor to know him. l could always count on him for advice and insight into the world of menswear. Such a professional. When I left his shop I always had a smile because he made my work fun.

I personally did not know Steve as he was 10 years ahead of me attending Luther Burbank, but, once a Burbank Titan, always a Titan. My late mother and father probably knew the family as we lived on I Parkway . R.I.P god bless.

My wife and I were saddened when we learned of Steve´s passing. My wife and Steve were in the Luther Burbank High School graduating class of 1966, and we went with Steve and his date to their Senior Ball at the Memorial Auditorium in Sacramento. In high school we spent many fun times with Steve at school events, nature outings, and parties. We also attended Steve and Sue´s outdoor wedding in a beautiful Sacramento backyard. Steve always had a positive outlook and a smile on his face. He will be deeply missed by us.

I am ever so saddened to read of Steve´s passing. He was my very first childhood friend when his family and mine lived on J Parkway. We spent many hours roaming the area and playing together back in 1955. I visited him often at Irwin´s downtown and again when he established S.Benson in East Sacramento. Indeed, he was a kind and caring person and I offer my sincere condolences to all his family.
