Steve Colley Obituary

1940 - 2014
Born on May 3, 1940, Steve passed away unexpectedly and peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday, April 8, 2014 at the age of 73. His character revealed devotion, honesty, seriousness, but most of all, playfulness. Steve always provided humor and laughter wherever he went. He was most known for joking with and giving those around him a hard time. He was skillful at everything, and would aid anyone who needed assistance. Steve was preceded in death by his daughter, Donna, who welcomed him with open arms. You could not ask for a better husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. After 53 years of marriage, he is survived by his wife, Jeannine Benoit. Father to Susan (Mike), Cathy (Nick), and Douglas (Michelle). Grandfather to Caprice, Aaron, Desmond, Casey, Leah, Dylan, Brynna, Rachel, Michael, Nathan, and Tony. Great-grandfather to Kira and Donovan. The adorable family pet, Roxy, also survives him. Steve put in 20 years in the Air Force and was a Vietnam Veteran. After retiring, he began a second career and worked as a structural iron worker in Local 118, which he worked aside his son for many years. He spent most of his life and retirement bowling, skeet shooting, hunting, and destroying clay with the tens of thousands of rounds he reloaded. Family and friends are respectfully invited to attend a funeral mass on Tuesday, April 15, 2014, at 10:30 am at Saint Lawrence Catholic Church, 4325 Don Julio Blvd, North Highlands.

I met Steve through Skeet League and want to share a story. Each league night includes a shoot-off if your score ends with the "lucky number." I was in a shoot-off with Steve, and he won (he really was a great shooter). When I came to league the next week he came up to me and handed me $20.00 (which is the winning amount from the shoot-off). I looked at him with a puzzled expression and he explained that his score was calculated incorrectly, and he should not have been in the shoot-off. He said that I was the winner, and gave me the winnings. I'm sure the integrity I saw there was typical of such an honorable man. I feel luck to have known him.

I came to know Steve and Jeannine through bowling. Always a warm, friendly smile and the giver of great hugs while simultaneously giving you a "hard time"! Steve, my dear friend, you will be missed.

I can't even begin to express my condolences to Steve's family. It's been years since I last saw him but my daughter Lori will never forget the times we spent with the family. The first thing I remember is his since of humor! God bless him and he and Donna will be together again! My heartfelt sorrow goes out to your family

I'd like to share a story. I shot skeet league with Steve and we were both in the "shoot-off" and the end of the night. This is a somewhat random event based on the number your score ends with. Steve won (he was a great shooter). The following week he came up to me and handed me $20.00 (which is the winnings from a shoot-off). I looked at him with a puzzled expression. He explained that he learned that there was a scoring error, and he should not have been in the shoot-off, so I would have been the winner. I only knew him through skeet shooting but I'm sure this honor and integrity carried through to his entire life. I feel privileged to have known him.

Dad, I cannot believe you are gone. I am grateful you were not gravely ill or debilitated with sickness, and went peacefully in your sleep. The family and friends are in disbelief over your sudden disappearance from our lives. You are the example of a nearly perfect man (only because no one is actual perfect). When we meet again, you can correct me and say, “No, I am perfect, and Mr. wonderful.” I am sure it was glorious to be reunited with Donna, and your mom and dad. I know that every time I think of you, you are in my heart. I love you and will miss you every day of my life.
