Thomas Lytle Obituary

Tom was born on June 1, 1933 to the late Astrid and Ford Lytle. Tom is survived by his daughter and son in law, Anne and Mike Harry, his grandsons, Elliott and Mitchell Harry, his sister, Susan Gilmore and nephew, Ford Gilmore. He was preceded in death by his high school sweetheart and wife of 62 years, Helene Kellogg as well as his grandson, Daniel Harry. Tom graduated from Sacramento High School and the California Maritime Academy. He served in the US Navy as navigator on the USS Vega. Tom graduated from the University of San Francisco School of Law. He practiced law in Sacramento for over 50 years representing deserving people including many injured workers for whom he had a special affection, having been the grandson of a blacksmith from Sweden. In addition to many typical professional associations, Tom was a proud member of the American Board of Trial Advocates. Tom enjoyed music, photography and sports, but his passion was golf. He was a long time member of Valley Hi Country Club where he was a two time club champion, senior champion and club president. Tom was a generous, endearing and humble soul with a sharp intellect and keen sense of humor. His classic stories will be fondly remembered by all. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the CCHAT Center Sacramento, 11100 Coloma Road, Rancho Cordova, CA 95670. A memorial service will be held on Friday, October 23, 2015 at 11:00am at Valley Hi Country Club, 9595 Franklin Boulevard, Elk Grove, CA 95758.

Tom was very kind and welcoming man to me when I arrived in California 6 yrs ago. He used to whisper this funny beautiful bird noise "KooKooARoo" whenever I got close. I witnessed true loving strength when I first watched this incredible man grieve the loss of a dear young person in his life...and again when he so lovingly and reverently shared the sorrow of his wife's passing. He was a beautiful teacher, with a quick wit and a wide open heart. He taught with kindness and corrected with compassion. He words and humor live on in me for a long long time...and I will always remember his generous kindness. The morning of his memorial, far away from Elk Grove, I stood on a hill in the country and watched a beautiful hawk soar overhead announcing the day! I know he was reminding me of the bird call of this precious happy soul..now soaring with angels! Rest in peace, sweet Tom!

Ann,
Your Dad and I remained in close contact and collaboration throughout our law careers and shared many experiences in maritime and railroad cases. He was a terrific trial lawyer and a loyal friend always. I truly will miss him.

I knew Tom for a short 5 years. We had the California Maritime Academy as a common interest. He formed a loose knit group of fellow alumni and named it the Cosmic Chowder Society. We met 4 times a year for lunch and sea stories. He was a good friend and wonderful, giving person. He will be missed!

Ann: So sorry to hear of your dad's passing. He and I had a lot of fun together, except at our annual Christmas Eve golf game with Dave Borges and John Cronick. We always seem to lose. He was a good man and I will miss him and his emails.

My sincere sympathy to you and your family. Your dad was my lawyer a very long time ago. He was a very kind and friendly man. We reacquainted several years ago when I worked at the State Capitol. May he rest in peace.
