Thomas McAfee Obituary

6/18/40 - 1/16/19 Tom McAfee, otherwise known as Dad, Pops, Mac, Fred, Tomatito, Tommy, Grandpa Larry, Grandpa Tom and Uncle Tom passed away peacefully on January 16, 2019 at the age of 78. Tom was born in Minot, North Dakota and had lived in California for most of his adult life. Tom is survived by his wife Mary McAfee of Sacramento, son Chad McAfee (Moria) of Citrus Heights, CA, son Craig (Joy) of Sacramento, granddaughter Megan, grandson Kiefer, granddaughter Meredith , grandsons Ronan and Iain . He leaves behind his surviving siblings: older sister Marge Davy of Burlington, North Dakota, older brother Dale McAfee (Dorothy) of Millbrae, CA. and younger sister Karon Strada of Cosmopolis, WA. He is also survived by first wife, Lynda Carbone of Georgetown, Texas. Sharing fond memories of Tom are his best friends, Tanya Beard of Sallisaw, Oklahoma, Steve Garrett (Karen) of Lakewood, Colorado, Tony Camilleri of Petaluma, Ca. and numerous close friends and family. He was preceded in death by his parents Ed and Ann, brothers Harold, Bill and Gary; sisters, Hazel, Edna, Pat, LaDonna and his beloved dog, Pebbles. While growing up in North Dakota, Tom worked at various jobs including helping his older siblings, their families and other local farmers plow the fields. With every cent he had saved from his years of working, Tom left North Dakota the night he graduated from high school and never looked back. While heading out west with a couple of his classmates, Tom worked any odd jobs he could find, including a stint at a frosted flake factory. As an adult he worked at McAfee's department stores in San Bruno and Novato, California, then onto his own retail toy store, Northgate Toys and Hobbies in Terra Linda-San Rafael, CA. In 1974, he moved to Sacramento, went on the road selling paint supplies, eventually transitioning to mainly toy and hobby sales. Tom was an account sales executive for numerous retail toy distributors. Among his major accounts were Longs Drug Stores and Raley's Supermarkets along with several independent toy and hobby retailers. As everyone's favorite uncle, Tom will be fondly remembered for many things such as: the pet skunk he had while working at the golf course in high school, his prized pink Pontiac and his pretty feet. Tom was a great cook, his famous potato salad and pheasant in cream sauce were among his specialties. As Tom the toy man, he was a natural magnet for children and loved sharing his knowledge/love of the outdoors with young people. Tom was the consummate salesmen, he could talk someone down on the price of a Christmas tree, convince utility companies to reduce his monthly bill and once received free gas for a year on a car he purchased because it was the wrong color. Tom's hobbies included fishing and hunting, wine tasting, daily trips to the donut shop and annual vacations at the Sea Ranch. A lifelong republican, a lifetime sportsman, stubborn, kind, generous, mischievous, funny, are many of the characteristics that have been used to describe him. He left a mark on our hearts as well as our life. As a registered organ donor, Tom was able to make a difference in people's lives even after he left us. A celebration of life is planned at a later date. In memory of Tom's life any donations in his name may be made to The Bruce Verhoeven Foundation supporting the Sacramento law enforcement community.

Mary, my thoughts are with you and Tom's family. I hope we can see each other soon. I see a reference to his friends in Salisaw, now I know yet another connection to you two.
