Well, this is a very late sharing of condolences, but my goodness, I am so sorry to see this Janice. I've on idea how to contact you, and no idea if you will ever see this, but if you do, know that I have thought of you often over the years and hoped you were well. You can still find me on FB thought I'm not on it a lot. But if you see this, please message me. Would love to say hello -

Todd and I went to Brannan and JFK together, and although we lost touch after high school, small things like alphabetical seating (Kawate > Kimura) create lifelong memories of friends gone too soon. I hope Todd has everlasting peace.

I have so many great memories of you Todd - I can't pick just one. From helping Derek cheer you up with a funny (but dirty!) jingle when we were little; to playing hoops in Hawaii before the family reunion; and losing to you in Trival Pursuit AND bingo. I really enjoyed our conversations about independent films -- and particularly remember reciting lines from Trainspotting in a really bad Scottish accent (ok, yours was much beh-ah!). I am so lucky to have had you in my life, Toddy. You remain my heart forever. -Cousin Jay

My enjoyable 5-6 year seasonal relationship with Todd was in the context of youth soccer. I was "Da Bears" assistant coach and head coach over a period spanning the late 80's to early 90's.
As in all youth team sports, there was usual bonding among team mates and the token tolerance of the coaches. However, in Todd's case there was genuine respect of the coaching staff and 100% effort on the practice field and during game time. Sure it's true Todd's Dad was one of the assistant coaches, but I'd like to think Todd would have behaved the same even if his Dad was not involved.
The bottom line is that for several years I was able to watch him and all the other Bears develop physically and emotionally in a positive and fulfilling manner. And it was my privilege to do so. Thank you Nelson and Janice for raising such a quality individual and for letting me be a very small part of his life.

Todd was our neighbor and though we never got to know him his absence is felt in our community. We were very shaken by this loss and can only imagine the pain his loved ones must be facing. We send only good thoughts your way and wish for peace for all those left behind as well as for Todd.

Todd was a spark of wit and humor. A brilliant mind in a very private space. A gift to us all while our lives intersected. Thank you, Lord, for the blessing of Todd. Carry him home, we pray.

Todd was a year older than me going through school, but I knew him through many mutual friends. He was a great person to be around, and I was very happy to reconnect with him recently at DWR. My deepest condolences to the family. He will be greatly missed by all.

I was so saddened to hear the news. I went to school with Todd from Wenzel through JFK. Although I haven't seen him in a long time, I still remember him being this really funny guy and always so nice. My thoughts and prayers are with the Kawate family during this time.

Todd was my partner in crime for a few years in elementary school - we'd ride up and down the greenbelt during those long summer days, dig around his treasure trove of cool toys, and watch The Breakfast Club over and over and over again. Auntie Janice and Uncle Nelson were just as influential to me during those years as my parents. They treated me like their own son, or at the very least a nephew. We drifted as the years went on, but so many of the childhood memories I hold dear are ones with Todd. He was my first best friend. My heart goes out to his family during this tough, tough time.

My deepest condolences to the Kawate family. I remember Todd as always being so genuinely nice and very funny. Although I wasn't a close friend, he still brought smiles to my face and to many others around him. Praying for comfort for the Kawate family.

Todd always had the sweetest face and the funniest jokes. He was part of Caroline Wenzel that made it silly, amazing, and unforgettable. Thank you for sharing such a gift that touched so many.

Todd and I went to school from the 4th grade through high school. He was a great guy and we always ran into each other around Sac, especially around the holidays. Rest in peace, my friend. You will be missed dearly.

Todd's mom watched me after school at Wenzel. We would spend every day together playing video games (we LOVED Contra), hot wheels, GIJoe, and making up this thing we called the "Garfield Dance." I am completely shocked and saddened by this news but hope that he has found his peace. The Kawate family is in my thoughts.

I worked with Todd at the Dept. of Conservation for many years and he was one of the nicest people I have ever known! I always enjoyed talking with him about travel as we both shared a sense of adventure to get out and experience the beauty of wild places. I will forever think of him when I venture out into the wilds and will miss his wry sense of humor! My heartfelt condolences go out to his family.

Our junior or senior year Todd and I had speech and debate together. We were supposed to have memorized a poem as a homework assignment then present it to the class. Neither Todd or I had done the assignment so we decided to recite song lyrics like we were reciting a poem. He chose "Ice, Ice Baby." He recited it like William Shatner does beat poetry. It was the funniest thing I had ever heard and one of my fondest high school memories. The teacher ever caught on.

Todd, from four years in Deutsch class to mall rattin at Arden Fair Mall, to me pointing out to Frau Frank that you and Thanh Trac were ditching class instead of singing German Christmas carols, you played a meaningful role in my life. Everyone knew you for your smile and charm in the warm-hearted way you responded to people. Never over-bearing or judgmental you were always ready to hang out with whomever, whenever. I pray that you had a place in heaven from the days you came out to church. I hope to see you up there buddy. I honestly do. I'm sorry I wasn't around when you were in your worst pain. But I'm glad to have seen you last Christmas one last time and to see the same Todd that I shared my adolescence with. Goodbye Todd.

I remember Todd from our early days at Caroline Wenzel Elementary School. The first yearbook for 1986-1987 shows Todd and I in Mrs. Hester's class together with 26 others. I will miss Todd. His family has my deepest sympathy at this very difficult time. I will pray for your comfort.

Todd was a great coworker and friend. He will be truly missed. His easy going personality and friendly nature made him a joy to be around. His wisdom for GIS was sought after by the majority of DES. I pray that God would pour out peace and comfort for Todd's family during this difficult time.

We are so saddened to lose Todd. Although he only worked at DES for a short time we were all so encouraged by the GIS knowledge he brought to our Division. He was a very nice and friendly co-worker. Our hearts go out to the family.
