Wayne Harbert Obituary

HARBERT, Wayne Allan
Born January 27, 1928, received his final passport stamp on September 9, 2009, in Sacramento. A native of Denton, Texas, he lived in Rancho Cordova for 50 years. A charter member of Cordova Presbyterian Church, he served as an elder and deacon, sang bass in the choir, and served as deacon at Celtic Cross Presbyterian Church. Wayne was a naval veteran of WWII and retired Sacramento County Probation Officer. An accomplished, shameless punster, he loved jokes, storytelling, humor and was a true people person, good neighbor and friend to many. Wayne traveled extensively and loved local theater, concerts, and life. Preceded in death by his wife of over 56 years, Bessie Drucilla ''Dru'' Harbert, he was father of Wayne Harbert Jr. of Oakland, CA, Dru Harbert Dumas of Ft. Worth, TX, Paul Mitchell Harbert of Sacramento, CA, David Harbert of Orangevale and had nine grandchildren. A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, Sept. 19, at 2:00 p.m. at Celtic Cross Presbyterian Church, 5839 Dewey Drive, Citrus Heights, CA. In lieu of flowers he requested a donation to the charity of the donor's choice.

We are saddened by Wayne's sudden departure on "The Big Cruise'. Wayne (as well as Dru) were always generous and jovial people as well as caring and committed to CPC where we all met.
Best wishes to the still growing family of Harberts. Prayers for safe travel and much adventure.

Wayne and Dru became the perfect examples friendship as the Harpers moved to Rancho Cordova in the early 60s. Their faith and fellowship as the church was formed was integral to the success of that venture. Wayne lived well with a wonderful sense of humour and obvious enjoyment of life. God bless him and love to you he leaves behind.

We were saddened to hear of the sudden passing of dear Wayne. A fixture at CPC in Rancho Cordova all the years we were there, he went on to enjoy more of life's adventures even after the passing of his dear wife Dru. I am glad he found companionship in Georgianne to continue traveling and enjoying life. He will be missed.

I hadn't seen Wayne for many years but was so saddened when I read of his death. I remember so well the years we were all at Williamson. We had many T.G.I.F. parties at their home and both he and Dru were such gracious hosts. His sense of humor and story telling always had all of us going!! (especially us gullible ones!!!) He was so proud of his family and I know he will missed tremendously! My thoughts are with you.

Wayne was a genuine person with an open and gregarious heart. He and Dru were dear people who always showed their friends loyalty, compassion and generosity of spirit. I miss him and his funny email jokes. He is now joined in love with Dru, whom I know he missed beyond measure. He has returned to his real home where I imagine him peaceful and beyond a joy we can fully comprehend. My heartfelt sympathy and prayers to his wonderful family.

I had the pleasure of meeting Wayne through my mom, Georgie. He always had us laughing and seemed to enjoy life. I know now he is with his beloved wife Dru cracking jokes in heaven!

To all of Wayne's Family--I met Wayne on a cruise in Feb. 2003 on which we sailed from San Diego to Hawaii and back. Wayne kept us entertained each night at dinner and when we saw him around the ship. Dru was always so supportive and happy as we were with his unending jokes. We kept in touch by e-mail. He kept us laughing at our computers also. God Bless You in your time of sorrow, but know that he is in a better place, free of all earthly pain.

Since I read that Wayne had died, I have remembered so many special moments.. As a drug unit partner who was a social worker as well as a cop and an adult court colleague who always loved a pun and saw the irony in the situations defendants got themselves into but could write a logical, technically proficient sentencing report. Most of all, I will always remember how Wayne, Dru and Paul helped me through the most difficult situation of my life, the death of my daughter. How lucky I was to have Wayne in my life during that difficult time.

My deepest condolences to all the Harberts. All of you were a very important part of my family's time in Rancho and the CPC. I remember your dad fondly for his sense of humor, his big heart and hug, and am grateful especially for his long friendship with and support of my folks. I send all my best thoughts.
