William Bican Obituary

William Louis Bican

May 6, 1941 - April 13, 2023

Sacramento, California - William "Bill" Bican was laid to rest today, on what would have been his 83rd birthday. Per his wishes, his ashes were scattered on Puget Sound, where he spent many happy summers. Born May 6, 1941 in Dunsmuir, CA, he died April 13, 2023 of natural causes in Sacramento. A McClatchy class of '59 alum, he graduated from UC Berkeley and earned his master's from Sac State University. He played semi-pro baseball with the Roseville Merchants and the Dales wearing the tools of ignorance behind the plate. Accomplished in both baseball and football, he was an inductee of the Northern California Old-Times Athletic Sports, La Salle Baseball and CK McClatchy Athletics halls of fame. He spent over 50 years in the classroom, teaching thousands of students at Burbank and McClatchy and Sac City College. He was preceded in death by parents Phyllis and George Bican and is survived by son Kenn Bican, daughter Anne Stokes and granddaughter Grace Stokes. Remembrances in his name may be sent to McClatchy's booster club at www.restoretheroar.org.

I met William through his daughter, Anne, in high school. I remember him being a kind, warm, funny man. He always made me feel welcome. His passing saddens me. I regret that I my adult self didn't get a chance to know him. I think we could have been friends. Much love to Anne, Ken, and everyone else who loved him.

Bill and I roomed together at Cal. We were life long friends even though I lived in the San Diego area all my life. We still have pictures of our children hanging in our hallway that he took. He will be missed by all my family.

One of my favorite teachers at Luther Burbank. I'm sure had an impact on many students in his classes as he did on me. My condolences to all his family and friends. RIP Mr. Bican.

My deepest sympathy and condolences to the family. Bill will be missed. We've been friends since I was 14 years old. We met at McClatchy.

I remember Bill Bican very well. We met at McClatchy when I was 13, and we were lifelong friends. Bill was a gentle, loving, sweet man. He was devoted to his children, grandchildren and friends. He loved teaching at Sacramento City College. His interests were baseball, football, and photography. He reminisced quite often about playing baseball in high school, and afterwards. He will be missed. My deepest sympathy and condolences to all of his family.
