Dolores "Lori" Brown, 84, of San Lucas passed away on June 9, 2023, at Mee Memorial Hospital in King City. She was born in Salinas on July 11, 1938
Dolores was the only daughter of Benjamin and Madeline Gould. She grew up living the ranch life first in Reliz Canyon and then on the family cattle ranch in Arroyo Seco. She often spoke of the days of growing up with her brothers, swimming in the river, and riding her horse, "Lady." She loved being a country girl. Dolores was a graduate of the King City High class of 1956. She married in 1958, and moved to Los Gatos and San Jose until later returning to Arroyo Seco in 1971.
Dolores' hobbies included being outdoors and sunning her legs, crocheting blankets to give away, playing guitar and singing. She wrote many of her own songs and even performed every day at the Salinas Valley Fair in 1970. Dolores worked at L.A Hearne warehouse in Greenfield, Coastal Ag Chemicals, and Western Farm Service but her most memorable years were spent working as a "cafeteria lady" for the Greenfield Union School District. She spent 20 years serving kids in Greenfield and was often recognized later in life by grown adults who remembered her from their childhood. The cafeteria staff stayed close and formed a lifelong connection, continuing to meet and support one another, more like family than coworkers.
During most recent years, Dolores traveled to Salinas and San Jose for health appointments. No matter what, she went in with a positive attitude and witty sense of humor. Often, she would go into a quiet waiting room of somber people, most staring at their phones, and have them all chatting and smiling before she left. She was someone that everyone felt connected to and never met a stranger.
Dolores is survived by her partner of over 30 years, John McCormack. John brought much happiness and love into her life, and she was so proud to call him "her Man." Dolores was a proud mom of her three children: Scott Brown (Linda), Douglas Brown (Susan), and Kelly Scettrini (Matt). She is also survived by two brothers, Lloyd and Gordon Gould (Dixie); as well as sister-in-law Maxine Gould. Dolores was so proud of her nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind her favorite sidekick and furry cat friend, Sis.
Dolores was preceded in death by her parents, as well as her brothers, Ben Jr., Bob, and Martin Gould. Also, sister in laws Gloria and Karen Gould, as well as niece Amanda Recio.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations In Memory of Dolores Brown to Greenfield Union School District, 493 El Camino Real Greenfield, CA 93927. Donations received will support teacher classroom projects, including snacks for students in need.
A private family celebration of life will take place at a later date.
