Avery Stoner Obituary
SALISBURY - Avery Cromwell Stoner, more affectionately known to his family and friends as "Joe," departed this life on Monday, Oct. 14, 2013, at Liberty Commons Nursing Home after several months of declining health.
Avery was born Feb. 17, 1937, in Rowan County, the younger of two sons born to the late Oliver Cromwell and Mildred Kerr Stoner. His brother, George "Sonny" Stoner also preceded him in death.
Avery received his early education at Dunbar Elementary and Dunbar High School, East Spencer. He attended Livingstone College, Salisbury, where he graduated with a degree in Business Administration. After graduation, he entered the military and served with the U.S. Army as an Administrative Specialist, stationed in Germany.
Following his military tour, Avery returned home joined the Army Reserves and taught Business Education at Dunbar High School before accepting employment at Hefner VA Medical Center in Salisbury. He retired from the Nursing Service of the VA Medical Center.
Avery is survived by a son, Kevin Anthony (Christine) Holmes, Durham; two grandchildren, Kevin Anthony Holmes Jr. and Alexis Nicole Holmes, both of Durham; a devoted niece, Bonnie Stoner, and great-niece, Natalie Tinker, of East Spencer; and many cousins and friends.
Service: Graveside Service with Military rites will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, at U.S. National Cemetery, Statesville Boulevard.
