Bertha Cockerl Obituary

Bertha Yvonne Correll Cockerl was called home on Wednesday, October 1, 2025 after a short illness. Mrs. Cockerl was born February 19, 1944 in Rowan County, NC. She was the second oldest of seven children born to the late Walter R. Correll, Sr. and Julia E. Poe Correll. Two of her siblings, Walter R. (Blue) Correll, Jr. and Dennis E. Correll, proceeded her in death. Mrs. Cockerl was educated in the Rowan County Public Schools. She graduated from Dunbar High School, East Spencer, NC in 1962. She attended Livingstone College in Salisbury, NC. She graduated in 1966 with a BA in Science.
Mrs. Cockerl taught a total of 33 years in the Rowan County Public School System at both West Rowan High and East Rowan High Schools. Yvonne received many awards and recognitions during her teaching career. In 1995, she was selected by the North Carolina Center for Advancement of Teaching to attend the Waterfalls Conference at Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, NC.
Beyond her teaching career, Mrs. Cockerl was a remarkable Entrepreneur. After her retirement, she started Main Street Café, a catering business and sandwich shop in downtown Salisbury. Mrs. Cockerl was also involved in the personal health care business with her husband, Robert Cockerl, Jr.
Yvonne, as she was affectionately called, loved to travel with her husband. The couple explored nearly all the 50 states in their motorhome. They also visited Hawaii and Puerto Rico several times. Her love for travel was matched only by her appreciation for the beauty of the world and the joy of sharing those experiences with loved ones.
Among those who remain to celebrate her life and honor her memory are her loving husband of 59 years, Robert Cockerl, Jr; her daughter and sons Jeffrey B. Cockerl, Michael Todd (Latoya) Cockerl and Tashia E. Cockerl; sisters, Jean C. Brown, Barbara A. Correll, Dawn C. (Christopher) Alexander; brother, George K. (Carolyn) Correll; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
Lovingly submitted by the family.
