Eugene Trexler Obituary

Monday, May 22, 2017 the family said goodbye to their loving husband, father, brother, and papaw, Eugene Edward “Shorty” Trexler, 89 at the W.G. Hefner V.A. Medical Center. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers: Clifford, George Henry Jr., and sisters: Lois Thomas and Serdell Smith. Those left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 63 years Dorothy “Dot” Trexler, his brother Purcell Trexler and sisters: Edna Rose Morgan (Albert), Dollie Pinkston (Randall ”Red”). His children: Audie Trexler (Cindy), Scotty Trexler (Sheila) and Kim (happily divorced). His grandchildren: Christina, Crystal, Nick, Regan and four great grandchildren. His parents, Jennie K. Trexler and George Henry Trexler had a baby boy on September 12, 1927 and Eugene's long and fulfilling life began. Dot and Eugene started their romance 67 years ago on a double date. She said he was the most handsome man she ever laid eyes on. They married three years later, had three children and built their home in Salisbury. Eugene honorably served his country in the U.S. Army and afterwards worked at the V.A. Hospital for 31 years. After retirement he continued as an outdoor power equipment mechanic as a hobby. Eugene's family describes him as strong-willed, generous, compassionate and dependable. He'd give the shirt off his back to anyone that needed it but never willingly accepted anyone's help in return. He loved animals; having a pet goat or duck was the ordinary in our family. He enjoyed watching WWE wrestling and reading comic books. He was a general handyman; He would fix anything no matter if it was fixed correctly or not. He loved to tell colorful stories about his childhood. For example; he would describe himself as a flying squirrel who jumped from treetop to treetop or the story of growing pumpkins large enough for a grown man to crawl into. We loved Eugene dearly and will cherish the time we had with him. He truly cared about people and wanted nothing more than to help anyone. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. We will truly miss him and feel a definite void in our lives. He will never be forgotten. The family would like their appreciation of Ashley and Robin's care from the V.A. Medical Center ICU to be recognized. Visitation will be accepted at the family's home. Lyerly Funeral Home is serving the Trexler family. Online condolences may be made at www.lyerlyfuneralhome.com.
