Jacquelyn Fleming Obituary

Jacquelyn 'Jackie' Fleming

SALISBURY - Jacquelyn "Jackie" Fleming, 65, of Salisbury, and formerly of Whiteville, passed away Monday, March 4, 2013, at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Born Aug. 17, 1947, in Salisbury, she was the daughter of the late Gwendolyn "Jinks" Bailey Fleming and Robert H. Fleming.

She was educated in Woodleaf schools and graduated from West Rowan High School and Asbury College, Wilmore, Ky. While at Woodleaf and West Rowan High School, she was taught Bible by Miss Catherine Brazell, who influenced her life.

After graduation, she went to Whiteville, where she taught in the city schools from 1969-2004 before retiring.

She was a member of Unity Presbyterian Church, National Educators Association (NEA) and North Carolina Association of Educators (NCAE).

While growing up as a child, Vacation Bible School at Unity Presbyterian Church made an impression on Jackie. She was devoted to her Lord and was involved with various churches in Whiteville, where she enjoyed teaching mission books at local Baptist churches.

Over the past 18 months, Jackie had been in the hospital or nursing homes due to a number of health issues. After almost 43 years in Whiteville, she looked upon her move to Brian Center of Salisbury "as an adventure" and as the will of God, so she could be near her twin sister, Gwen. They had good times together. She made friends and was thankful for the service of Tabernacle Baptist Church on Sundays at the Brian Center. After the service she and Gwen had a sing along with residents.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Nell F. Deaton and Louise Fleming; and brother-in-law Dwight Deaton.

Those left to cherish her memory are her twin sister, Gwendolyn Fleming Holliman and husband Nathaniel of Woodleaf; nephew Reitzel Deaton and wife Cathy of Zebulon; aunt Pauline Fleming of Woodleaf; two great-nieces; one great-nephew; one great-great-nephew; many cousins; and friends including Sonja Sellers and family of Whiteville.

Service: A memorial service will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday (March 9) at Unity Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Phillip Hagen officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Visitation: The family will receive friends in the Fellowship Hall at Unity Presbyterian Church following the committal service.

A memorial service will be conducted in Whiteville at a later date.

Memorials: May be made "Memorial for Jackie Fleming" at Child Evangelism Fellowship of North Carolina, 420 W. Academy St., Fuqua-Varina, NC 27526-2163.

Jackie and I have known each other since the first week of college. I visited her and she visited me in California. I am so happy that we were friends. She was an inspiration to me and always trusted in God.

Mrs. Gwendolyn F. Holliman, I am sorry for the lost of your sister. I don't know if you will remember me or not; but I was a student in the Fourth grade at Enochville Elementary School when you first came to Enochville. I thought you move away from this area but now I see that you are in Rowan county. Just thought that I would let you know that I am thinking about you during this time of the passing of your sister. May God give you the peace that passes all understanding during this time.

She had a sweet spirit. I have no doubts that she is now with the Lord. She was (and still is) an encouragement to us all. She will be missed.
