I always loved John and working with him in law enforcement for 26.5 years. John was as real and kind at the beginning as he was at the end of my career in 2020. It´s very hard to find a good hearted man that remains the same year after year. This set him above the rest! He will be greatly missed but never forgotten by me. Praying for his family!

Dear Family, I am truly sorry for your loss of John. He was such a kind, soft-spoken, Christian man, with a wonderful smile! I knew him during my 19 years in a law firm and the D.A.´s Office. He always had a positive attitude and something thoughtful to say. I know he will be greatly missed by your family.
Condolences,
Gaynell (Scruggs) Lambert

John was a very very nice person. I remember him from Dunbar High School. He was low key, but you knew he was there. Was very competitive as a basketball player for Dunbar. My condolences to the family. He will be missed by many!!

I worked with John at the Sheriff's Office for many years and the description of him as being "soft spoken" is very correct. I don't believe I ever saw John without a smile...he really was a joy to be around. Let me say, that many law enforcement officers need to reflect how John represented someone in authority. Never boasting, humble, non-arrogant...he was "THE" perfect example of self-control when dealing with the public. I will always treasure our conversations and that easy-going demeanor that anyone that knew John could give a "amen" to. If I could only be half of what John was in character, I would have accomplished a mighty thing. Rest in peace brother!

John was a true friend and also a wonderful inspiration to me, from the first day that I was sworn in as a deputy of Sheriff John Stirewalt. He was a true mentor in every way. "A true gentleman", and published servant!
My most sincere condolences to the family, and to the community on the loss of such a great man.
