Joseph Sloop

Joseph Edison Sloop, 87, of Charleston, formerly of China Grove, passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2016. Born on March 4, 1929 in China Grove, he was the son of the late Addie Belle Hileman an Brunner C. Sloop. He graduated from China Grove High School and Catawba College. He served his country in the U. S. Air Force in the Korea War era. He was a lifelong member of Lutheran Chapel Lutheran Church, in China Grove serviving as Church Treasurer, Church Council Member, Sunday School teacher, Youth Advisor and Finance and other committees. Professionally, he retired from Citizens Savings and Loan in Salisbury, where he served as Vice-President and Comptroller. He served the public as as a Past President of the Central North Carolina Council, Boy Scouts of America, past Chairman of the Rowan County Housing Authority, past member of the Salisbury Kawanis Club, taught at Rowan- Cabarrus Community College in the Real Estate Licensing Progam. He also served on the Habitat for Humanity Committee and served two terms as Mayor of China Grove. He was awarded the Silver Beaver for Volunteer Work with the Boy Scouts of America, was awarded the Order of the Longleaf Pine for Volunteer work by the Governor of North Carolina. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded by his wife of 66 years, Thetis Briggs Sloop; brother, Grady Sloop; and sisters, Cannie S. Penninger, Ethel S. Hinson and Myrtle S. Goodman. Those left to cherish his memory is his daughter, Marcia S. Edwards (Wade) of Summerville, S.C.; son, Kevin C. Sloop (Suzie) of Cary; grandchildren, David W. Edwards (Sarah) of Summerville, S.C., Paul M. Edwards (Kimberly) of Liberty Township, Ohio, Katlyn B. Sloop-Kwiatkowski (John) of Raleigh, and Zachary J. Sloop of Cary. Also surviving him are his great-grandchildren, Alexander M. Edwards and Ethan M Edwards. Visitation and Service: Visitation will be on Saturday, Dec. 10, from 12:30 til 2:30 p.m., at Lutheran Chapel Church in China Grove with funeral following at 2:30 p.m., also at the church with Rev. William Connelly, minister. Burial will follow at West Lawn Memorial Park. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Lutheran Chapel Church, P.O.
