Julius Daniel Waggoner Sr. passed away on June 11, 2024, at the age of 90.
He was born on April 27, 1934, in Salisbury (Rowan County) to the late James Martin Waggoner and Julia May Johnson Waggoner.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his three older brothers James Martin Waggoner Jr. (Jane), Owen Charles Waggoner (Lois), and William Johnson Waggoner (Anne); and his two older sisters Mary Lena Waggoner Strayhorne (George) and Helen Frances Waggoner Michael (Don).
Julius graduated from Boyden High School in 1952. He attended and earned a degree in Industrial Relations at the University of North Carolina- Chapel Hill in 1958, following a 2-year stint in the US Army, mainly in Germany, from 1954 through 1956. In 1957 he married Barbara Anne Robison Waggoner, and they were married for 66 years.
In 1969 he moved from Charlotte to Salisbury to assist his father in his Real Estate Business and they established Waggoner Realty Company in the same year. In 1970 his family joined him in Salisbury. He managed his family's Rowan County Farms as well as their Arkansas Rice Farms upon his father's death.
Julius was active in the Harold B. Jarrett Legion Post 342, City of Salisbury Planning Board (being one of the founding members), Boy Scout Board, Trustee for the Rowan Museum for 6 years, Housing Authority Committee serving as President, Salisbury Board of Adjustments, and Realtors' Association where he was the oldest member. He was also a very active at St. John's Lutheran Church as a Church Council member, Sunday School teacher, choir member, and founding member of St. John's Men's Chorus. He continued to be active in the Rowan Chamber of Commerce for over 50 years where he served on the Board of Directors on several occasions. He was one of the initial members of the Sales Executive Club, and a volunteer at Rowan Helping Ministries. He was very proud to create and set up the first Oxford Houses in Rowan County. He and his wife Barbara were so happy in placing refugees in several properties in Salisbury through Lutheran Services Carolina New Americans Program. He was a member of Salisbury Country Club where he enjoyed playing tennis and many years of golf with lots of friends.
In addition to his wife, he leaves behind three children Julius Daniel Waggoner Jr., Rosalind Anne Waggoner Hines (Danny), and Marsha Elizabeth Waggoner Gniadek (Jeff). He was blessed with 10 grandchildren Julius Daniel Waggoner III, Rebecca Elaine Waggoner Jancic (Tim), Walter Bradley Waggoner, Madison Anastasia Hines Schmoll (Steven), Noah Asher Hines, Joshua Matthew Gniadek (Jennifer), Allison Noel Gniadek Doane (Micah), Molly Elizabeth Gniadek, James Christopher Gniadek, and Andrew Jacob Gniadek. He was a proud great-grandfather to Caleb James Jancic, Elaina Marie Jancic, and Emma Grace Gniadek.
He always tried to serve a Lord he truly loved. He dearly loved his family, and he strived to be a good son, husband, father, grandfather, and businessman.
The family would like to graciously thank the staff at Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte, the Rehab Hospital in Concord, and the Salisbury VA Hospital for their care of Julius during his time with them.
A service will be held on 11:00 am on Tuesday June 18, 2024, at St. John's Lutheran Church, 200 W. Innes St., Salisbury 28144. There will be a brief receiving of friends following. The service will be conducted by Rev. Darrell Norris. The burial will take place at 1:00 pm at Rowan Memorial Park with military honors conducted by Lyerly Joint Services Volunteer Honor Guard.
