Kathy Duke Obituary

Kathy Snyder Duke, 94, of Salisbury, passed away March 23, 2024, at her home with her family by her side.

Born May 5, 1929 in Wilkes County, NC, she was the daughter of the late Wiley Thomas Snyder and Nora McNeil Snyder. A 1954 graduate of the Rowan Hospital Nursing School, she trained in pediatrics at General Hospital in Washington, DC before transferring to the UNC-Chapel Hill Hospital as a pediatric nurse.

Kathy was the daughter of a WWI veteran wounded in France and realized her true calling was to serve our veterans. In 1958, she was hired by the Salisbury VA, earning certifications in Med Surge, Critical Care, Mental Health and Geriatrics. She received multiple accommodations during her 41-year career, serving veterans from WWI through Desert Freedom.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Salisbury.

Left to cherish her memory are her husband of 66 years, James “Jay” W. Duke; son, David J. Duke (Connie); sister, Betty Snyder McClure; grandchildren, Carol Duke Young (Cy), James A. Duke, Kristen Collins, Leah Welborn (Cody) and great-grandchildren, Raegan Young, Eli Young and Isla Welborn.

There will be a private service and burial will be at the Old Chapel Hill Cemetery at UNC-Chapel Hill at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Alzheimer's Association (alz.org) or Homes For Our Troops (hfotusa.org).
